Reading through year-end “best of” lists and my friends’ social media, it sometimes seems that it is not love, nor Christmas, but suffering that was all around.
In West Allis in the 1950’s the nuclear bomb threat drills included hiding under our school desks. The Russian government continues to be a menace. Same old stuff just different names. Authoritarians are a pain.
Tim, right now the glass is 2/5 full and that is all the optimism I can muster. Scary times. That aside, you are my fav....I appreciate your perspective. Thanks for being thorough and forthright.
This was brilliant, thank you. Indeed, the Twittersphere, FB, the media, the phone, the whole lot, work daily to ensure that their closed loop of doom and catastrophe keeps us watching and clicking. Fear sells. Fighting against their pulls towards the abyss is gonna take some discipline. We'll have to overcome that feeling that any smile, or celebration, or pleasure or hope -- looking forward to something! -- doesn't make us feel as if we're cackling at a funeral.
“In fact, the venerable journal of ideas you are reading now has an entire newsletter offering wall-to-wall coverage of the coming dystopia…”. 👆Was just too much today. Came here to cleanse the palette. 😄
Thank you Tim - had already read JVLs dark pessimistic take on our future which was entirely predictable. Your take is needed as so many on media whine and embarrass themselves with screechy cries of doom for all. You know what’s great about 2021? The fucking vaccine- that’s what. Plus therapeutics. This is not 2020 again and I will punch whoever tries to convince me it is
Tim Miller, sometimes you make me cry with your poignant thoughts and perspectives on humanity.

Thanks

As usual Tim, you hit all the highlights of 2021 with wit and intelligence.

I got a puppy. She’s a year old now and needs dog school, but she’s a high point
Happy New Year Tim. Good column.
Thanks Tim for your insights and the reminder to look up.
Fantabulous! And may I say, you clean up scrumptious-ly; suit jacket and tie “suits” you well.
I share your view that we must do better by being and acting better. The Dostoyevsky quote knocked me out. Thanks. Here's one for you:
Krishnamurti: The only revolution that needs to happen is in the individual human heart.
Indeed!

2021 was very great many reasons but we really don't need more than these two.
Trump stopped being president and the vaccine became available. And, of course, the Bulwark reached new heights!

No, Tim. JVL is always right. We're screwed.
Nah, all is not terrible. Thanks for this pieced. We needed it.
Great job with Perry on yesterday's podcast.
