omg I had to watch Caligula when it first came out for a college history course! this brings back so many memories of that time. I recall the professor assuring us that IRL times in Rome were much more pervy than the movie.
In college I took a class on the history of censorship in film. The professor was also really interested in exploring the question, "Is censorship ever good for the public?"
Knowing that most college students support unfettered freedom of expression, he regularly tried to challenge and break that spirit.
Hands down, his best effort was forcing the class to sit through the entire uncensored screening of ‘Caligula.’
I saw the original when it came out in one of the big movie palaces that didn’t make it out of the 20th century on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. I streamed this newly reassembled version on Prime video over the past two nights. I almost turned it off during the second half. It became increasingly tedious. Great interview though; better than any versions of the film.
Wow, this was almost a heartwarming interview. I “watched” the VHS when I was in college in the 90’s. It was a train wreck and even the sex could not keep me finishing it. Since then, I became a great admirer of Mirren’s work and it is one of those rare closure of the spectacle. I am so happy Malcolm and Helen like the completed work.

A buddy once (in high school) referred to Caligula as "Spanktacus" and I've never been able to think of it as anything else.

Another homerun interview. Thanks.
40 years later we still laugh over telling our dear neighbor how great the PBS series "I, Claudius" was, and she should watch it.
Poor sweet lady left the video store with "Caligula", and the next few church brunches were.... awkward. :-)
Have you seen the wonderful BBC The Caesars? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3x171JkUko etc.
Oh mine!
