Donald Trump and his supporters are the dregs of humanity.

I have this fantasy of the event that didnt happen—when the mob had caught Hawley and he was trying to convince them that like Nell Gwynn confronted by a mob, that he was the Trump whore.

My problem with the Wisconsin focus groups is that their observations of Biden are not actually based on any observations. They are based on what negatively biased others say 1) "Biden is just so confused, and he’s almost like a puppet who is saying what somebody tells him to say. Anytime he speaks, he gets so confused.” This just isn't so unless you watch the cherry-picked short clips on FOX. Biden has given several very good speeches. He is not an orator, but he is fine.

2) “I just don’t feel [Biden] is all there enough to keep going. " Ditto. More FOX nonsense.

If the comment were not based on FOX clips, then they were based on a serious lack of context. 1) "... the economy really is no better off than it was when Trump was president.” As if a pandemic and a war hadn't happened. Besides, most economic indicators show a pretty good economy. In spite of negative consumer sentiment, they are out there spending money hand-over fist in a record low 3.6% unemployment environment. GDP growth recovered from its 2020 setback and is back on the same growth trajectory as before. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/GDPC1

I don’t understand why no connection seems to be made between the recent departure of the Secret Service Director and the missing text messages. Just asking questions!!

Another takeaway from the blooper reel concerns TFG’s laziness. It was clear from his rejection of the sentence above the election being over that he had not reviewed the text(much less practiced it) before it was loaded into the teleprompter.

I sickens me that there are still, remarkably, Republicans who stand beside this vile man. It is sick. It is frightening!

Fabulous writing from all of you. Thank you!

"The purpose is to educate the American people and to cement in the public memory the infamy of Trump’s final days. They have succeeded magnificently...The effects of the committee’s work may not be evident in the short term (though there are some indications that the hearings have weakened Trump’s grip on the GOP), but they will be felt in the medium and long term as the import of what happened ripens in the national consciousness." -- Mona Charen

We can pray she's right. In the wishful thinking department, a Fox engineer "accidentally" shows the hearings, including Hawley's backside. Think he just realized none of the mob had a clue who he was?

Just in - Bannon was convicted on 2 counts!! YIPPEE!!!! Gives me a bit of hope.

And yet, in all likelihood, the GoP will have a house majority after the midterms.

Says something about a big chunk of the American electorate. The dangerous people are not Trump and his ilk and their enablers... the dangerous people are the large number of American voters who vote for them--and who will continue to vote for them.

Breaking news from WAPO: Bannon -----> GUILTY

Doesn't mean much until after the obligatory appeals---and then may not mean much after that. It is a misdemeanor. If he gets any substantive penalty I will be shocked.

I hope this shocks you. Besides being a commander in chief of the armed forces he is also the Grand Pubah of law and order of the U.S. He has sworn to uphold the law of the United States of America. In other words, if he has knowledge of, neglects reporting, stopping, or trying to break up a crime, he is negligent. He is an officer of the Court. People were killed. Negligent homocide???

How do you get from Bannon guilty of a misdemeanor to that (which isn't even about Bannon)?

I am not shocked by any of that because TFG/s election campaign and Presidential administration occurred right in front of my eyes and all of that was already there from the start.

He and pretty much all of his administration members were basically unfit and unworthy of office--and yet over 70 million Americans voted for more. THAT's what should be shocking. THAT is the problem.

The only explanation that makes sense to me is this...

It's a fucking cult.

He has easy, black-and-white answers to complex problems. And you know what they say about that? Easy answers to complex problems are always wrong.

He has found the vein of hate and he has tapped into it.

I confess, I've become a doomscroller, but here's a famous mantra I keep thinking about when I watch the J6 committee:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Trump may never hold office again but he still has his cult. DeSantis is just as depraved as Trump but without the excuse of insanity. I fear that the Supreme Court will legalize everything Republicans plan to do to arrange a one-party theocratic country.

Well said Mona Charen.

Been said before but worth repeating: the coup attempt isn't over. According to Jonathan Swan's reporting today in Axios, the MAGA movement is very busy on the down-low plotting the agenda for a 2025 trump administration. First up, replace 50,000 career civil servants at DOJ, DHS, Pentagon, State Department, all national intelligence agencies, etc. with people loyal exclusively to trump (think Attorney General Jeffrey Clark). Well-funded MAGA groups are already at work vetting the people to be installed via executive order immediately after a trump swearing-in. This is the playbook that has already given us a trumpified federal judiciary. The MAGA plotters acknowledge they won't have to fire all the existing civil servants to seize control--just enough to chill everyone else into obedience. Swan's reporting is scary. Just the evidence that this plotting is going on, and has big bucks behind it, is deeply troubling.
