Another great podcast and for the record, me love me some Amanda. Miss her at the bulwark.

I guess I struggle with a lot of the high level recommendations. To be clear, I loved how she bucketed the threats. Very helpful. However, I feel like the idea of throwing sand in the gears in the senate will likely be very ineffective. First, I don’t think people care about process arguments. Second, I think the big difference in what Cruz did in 2010 is different for a few reasons. The largest is that the media environment is so fractured that that those stunts don’t reach many people. Next, the voters in the base of each party are just too different for this strategy to work. Republicans base voters want and have wanted to burn the government down for a long long time (to be fair I never thought they would take it this far). The dem voters want the government to work for them. They don’t want it to be dysfunctional.

I guess I’m in the camp where you have to pick your fights and make them BIG. I just don’t think that the nominees are the place to bet the farm.

I always struggle with the norm discussions though. As tim said, I thought Biden’s meeting with Trump was ridiculous but nitpicking if Joe smiled or not is kind of low ball shit in my opinion. You either decide to protect norms or not. I find the nitpicking of “I like this norm not that one” kind of a waste of time because EVERYONE has a different opinion. Personally I’m for dropping all norms. If it’s not illegal dems/biden/harris should be willing to do it IF it’s beneficial politically.

I just don’t think we can bury are heads in the sand anymore. There is nothing that Republican politicians won’t do…even violate the law. Dems need to stop playing the game of the post Nixon rules.

Tim how insane would it be if we asked the nuggets to play like the Celtics in the 80s. The game has changed. Dems need to change with it and start shooting 3s.

"Personally I’m for dropping all norms. If it’s not illegal dems/biden/harris should be willing to do it IF it’s beneficial politically."

And if there are norms worthy of preserving, then they can be made into LAWS (and not congressional rules that congress gets to regulate for themselves).

Yep. That’s my point. Either codify them or don’t. But if you don’t, don’t be mad that the other side thinks you are joke.
