The current chair, Adriano Espaillat, is a formerly undocumented immigrant with a solid political pedigree. But some members are questioning his leadership.
There are big fights, and there are little fights. Trump has declared war on the 14th Amendment. It is shitty and punitive, and scapegoats immigrants, but the Lake Riley act makes it crystal clear with recent Congressional action, that all people, even those here illegally, are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the US.
The Democrats who voted for this can point to all of the documentation leading to the passage of the law, including Trump signing it, to argue that clearly anybody in this country for whatever reason, except a few people, if born here, are citizens.
Keep your eye on the goddamned ball. Making it impossible for a cowardly SCOTUS to rule that the children born here of people here illegally are not citizens is a way bigger deal than some poor sod being deported over shoplifting. It sucks but we need to triage. We’re in a war and the casualties are being brought in bleeding.
Dreamers are sympathetic figures in our society. Immigrants that cross over illegally for economic opportunity aren’t sympathetic on the whole to Americans at large (even if I personally sympathize with them).
Democrats are in a lose-lose situation on bills like the Laken Riley act. The point of the act is to detain illegals while they await charges because the system is slow and any violent crimes committed while awaiting trial are unconscionable to everyday Americans.
They need to support targeted deportations while opposing wide nets that have collateral damage. It’s a very hard needle to thread
I think Dems need to let all hell break loose and consider getting a focus group to figure out which bi-partisan way they should sing kumbaya with themselves.
I am being completely sarcastic here. But I don’t see Dems making any great forceful moves against the Repubs because the Dems love their white boards/excel sheets/100 point plans to change people’s minds 😂😂😂
I think that there have certainly been abuses of Temporary Protected Status with respect to several countries, but Venezuelans are eligible for asylum under black-letter law, and there's no way that any Venezuelan should be sent back against their will to the control of the dictatorial regime from which they fled.
Ruben Gallego certainly seems to be doing his level best to fill the designer shoes of Kyrsten Sinema. Seems likely that he, too, will become a crypto bro like Kyrsten when Arizona voters run him out of the Senate. I'm already looking for another candidate to support in 2030.
Be careful who you vote for. Trump’s immigration police will not be so careful about who they pick up. Those who approve may find themselves caught in the net. Whether these immigrants can stay or must leave, what religion advocates treating people like animals? Anyone familiar with Matthew?
That poor girl's name has been exploited with her sad death. Even her parents asked the politicos to stop it. Now a dubious bill carries her name. Wonder how she would feel about that if she could tell us?
Not enough has been said about the Laken Riley ACT - it is very wrong and a disgrace that it is still not reversed; our Federalist Society lawyers and judges are a disgrace.
It is good to see some in Congress waking up and figuring out they need to have bi-partisan cooperation to act against some of the actions against their constituents. I'm surprised that AOC isn't on board big time - not surprised that the unintelligent (like Boebert and her GED) don't have the guts to speak up. MAGA has many hateful ideas and good will prevail - after we beat down Musk and the Oligarchs. Do not buy Tesla or Amazon or Amazon pharmacy.
I have been wondering about Espillat since he is my rep. Good information, but not sure what I think. May be headed for too little-too late from the CHC.
I appreciate this addition of Adrian's column because it makes me realize I don't know much of the ins and outs of immigration, definitely great to get these insights here!
Agree. I get it a little on the retail end but the policy side I gave up trying to understand years ago. Nobody seems to be saying what they mean. Getting deeply reported insight into the policy side is something I didn't even realize I was missing.
It's an interesting read Adrian and one i find myself torn/troubled over. We (all of us and especially the democrats/Biden/et al) knew full well, immigration was an explosive powder keg that was going to become trump's golden ticket.
Now that it has blown up in our faces; here we sit arguing/debating the next big step? I'm sorry, but does that make any sense now? Too much? Too little?
I would argue loudly...too late. I know we all love to call trump supporters foolish, but at this moment in time, those of us who have been advocates for immigrants now find ourselves facing the wrath of man who doesn't give two shits about anything other than himself.
Perhaps, in retrospect, Biden, the Hispanic caucus and everyone else with their shorts in a bunch should have made this issue a priority in 2021 or 2022; rather than 6 or 8 months before the election I know, water over the damn, but we are all drowning in this watershed moment.
If we survive this, hopefully our foolishness of ignoring problems becomes a teachable moment.
That the CHC was “willing” to “work with [Trump] Republicans” shows that it - or its leader - is not serious at all. No one “works” with a dictator or oligarch … only for.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus and “its relatively sluggish response” probably reflects all responses these days—betrayal - although to be expected from Trump - is always shocking … even to the point of inertia. Which, I suppose, IS the point after all.

Espaillat - promoted beyond his abilities?

It's horribly exploitative......

That's a lot of insight and I appreciate reporting that leaves me unsure of where I stand.

I'm not holding my breath.

They knew what Trump was going to do with DEI. Didn't anyone tell them, they were one of DEI's targets?
I imagine that there were some Jews looking forward to the robust Social Democrat regime. Until they were led to that cattle car.
