Been mulling on this since the first disasterous minute of the debate. My objective conclusion:
1. Time will take either or both of these candidates relatively soon, and that will force a reset in both parties.
2. Given a reset is inevitable, the crisis conditions of the present election give Dems the advantage of pulling votes. The choice this election is “Democracy? [Yes] [No]” — which removes any distaste the NeverTrumpers have for the Dem candidate. A younger Dem will establish a TNG record for the next 4 years, making the next election* an easier choice when we inevitably face the next MAGA wannabe authoritarian, wearing less make-up and better fitting suits.
3. If we run Biden and he falters during the next term, and we don’t have control of the house, it will be an all out war to stop a VP choice, and if you don’t think MAGA will take full advantage of the opportunity Constitutional succession affords them, please Google Eric Prince. Running a complete ticket in 2024 insulates Dems from fuckery for 4+ years w/ regards to VP meddling.
4. The Gen Y+ crew is desperate for representation. The US government has the same appeal to them as shopping in an old Sears store; there’s zero affinity. They need something to vote FOR. Sure, there’s the typical list - I get it. But seriously, my kid’s generation is not being reached or represented. A younger ticket with a strong VP voice would be a major motivator for them. Dems get this for free in this election.
Ok, so, honestly - if folks are still on the fence about what it means to vote for Trump in this election, we’re lost as a society. The better option is to leave the undecideds to navel gaze and spend all our time bringing a new generation into the conversation.
This is, in some ways, a gift. Let’s make the most of it.
