Sorry, Tár is not the intellectual movie of the year, Banshees is. Tár is just a straightforward meditation on "is it about art or power?" The subtext of The Banshees of Inisherin completely escaped you guys. It's about Pádraic, metaphorically an animal, becoming human and how humans schematize reality so as to induce conflict, how we create reasons, identities, categories from nothing that become casus belli. It's brilliant
The Oscars got it ALL right - if you think it's ok for Hollywood to shit-can its own industry. The only movie up for an award that actually paid for jobs in Hollywood was snubbed - Top Gun. The movie that won was produced by people who have never done anything other than rock n'roll videos + commercials - and it showed. Is America ready to give up its standing as the world's top producer of great films? Because I think we took a GREAT LEAP FORWARD in that direction this year. What does it mean when a culture fires its geniuses (ie: Spielberg) and allows idiots to take over? Will Hollywood become like American television where the VOICE OF NEWS AND REASON has been hijacked by a bunch of un-educated and evil minded Australians: Fox News! Well - that certainly worked out well for us. After all - Fox News and its 24 hour/day rumble of fake news and propaganda gave us - TADA!!!! --- The January 6th Insurrection! Art/ Movies/ Television - These may seem innocuous to most Americans. But in the wrong hands they can give us nightmares - like ADOLF HITLER - or Donald J. Trump. Misinformed and Brainwashed Americans who never read books are ready to embrace all manner of monstrosities these days. And Now we're handing over the keys to one of our largest industries that affects how Americans view the world: Hollywood. Congratulations America! When we fail just remember - it's all your own doing - including the enabling of morons like Senator John Kennedy - an Oxford educated man who pretends to be an uneducated country bumpkin so he can stuff $millions of American dollars into his panties. The same Government that gave us - Lauren Boebert! A graduate of being a street-walking PAID ESCORT! And Marjorie Taylor Greene - a real Country Bumpkin who left her husband and kids for a life living In a GYM - where she slept with all her Gym Mates - an uneducated sociopath who has stalked many of our most worthy Government Leaders - including Nancy Pelosi, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and David Hogg - a fabulous person who is bright and articulate and a survivor of one of contemporary America's worst nightmares - a mass shooting at Parkland high school. Marjorie Taylor Greene is a sociopath who can barely pronounce words, who is sleeping her way up the food chain. Somehow I think The elevation of these lesser minds is being allowed to overtake American governance. Maybe I'm just 'Old Fashioned'. I mean - what do I know? I never abandoned my family to sleep my way to power and I've read a ton of books. I guess all those things make me ineligible to understand the pressing issues in contemporary America/ and unfit to ever serve in the US Congress, or in any form of Government, at all.
It's not very often that I hear Peter go off on a film like he did today "uninspired, incompetent and incredibly shallow" with some giggling in the background. A good episode to listen to and be entertained while having morning coffee.
Also, who the hell put together the Academy's 2023 "In Memoriam"-segment? So many unbelievable snubs. Paul Sorvino, Philip Baker Hall, Tom Sizemore, Melinda Dillon, Anne Heche, Fred Ward, Stella Stevens, and David Warner all disrespected. Robert Blake, okay, I kinda get, but the rest...really?
Peter somehow combines the grumbling tone of boomers trying to dismiss "Pulp Fiction" in 1995, and Gen Xers complaining about having their musical tastes validated by the mainstream in 1992. Quite a feat!
Sorry, guys, but I watched Tar on your recommendation. It’s going to be forgotten as quickly as it was praised. Had it been 45 minutes shorter it would be the movie you guys think it is. As is, it’s so bloated that it is more or less a feature-length meme of all the worst habits of editors/directors in the 70s wherein a wide shot would show a person simply walking to a building and entering it for 44 secs-a min.
I thought I was an Adam Driver completist until I heard this review. Shall be filed under the heading of "Just Another of Life's Disappointments".

I cried rather a lot Sunday night. Didn't expect it and/but was perfectly happy with the results.

Outstanding!

Martin McDonagh losing Best Original Screenplay to EEAAO is borderline-criminal, though.
