Desantis is a total idiot. So he wants to go to war with a company that brings many, many bucks to his state because he's butt-hurt they bucked his ridiculous laws? Wow, what a thin-skinned little bitch. Does he really have the temperament to be president? Oh, hell no!

I think she’s been auditioning for president since people liked her performance as ambassador. I thought, early on in that role, she did a good job of working through Trump when many tried to work around him. But, in doing so, she’s sold out and is now trying to field some “moderate” position while making a grab for the maga base. No thanks.

It really galls me that the forced-birthers call themselves "pro-life". The only lives they care about are unborn children. Once they are born, they don't give a damn about their welfare. They don't give a crap about the mothers either. They don't care about the proliferation of guns. I refuse to call these people "pro-life".

The way DeFascist is going, he will not be re-elected as governor assuming he can run for a third term.

The proof that MTG is dumb as well as vile is all her malapropisms. It proves she never reads. For example, Pelosi's "gazpacho" or "peach tree dishes" or "wonton" killings. Her sidekicks Boebert and Gaetz are just as dumb.

Mickey Haley? Everyone knows she is born Minnie Haley! The great transphobe DeSantis can't even get his opponent's gender right!

Tiny D is such a goofball. It seems he decided a world tour in search of charisma was in order. One wonders if his nasal congestion is a metaphor for his stuffed up attitude towards others.

Weds. Podcat “Carlson the John Stewart of the right.”

This shows the degradation of Republicans. Stewart is a public intellectual who works to help veterans and first responders, and other important issues. Your very smart( he may be ,but he’s no intellectual) Tucker is a malignant narcissist who has done nothing good for the country, nothing! What a specious characterization!

In my 70+ years I can think of no word that had its connotation flip 180 degrees faster than the word "conservative." Conservatives used to believe in small government, fiscal responsibility, personal freedom, a sound domestic policy and a stabilizing presence on the world stage. Since the Tangerine Tyrant, somehow, became POTUS none of this holds true anymore.

Christie declares that DeSantis is no conservative, but I must disagree. Today's members of the conservative movement are firmly entrenched in the ideas of a nanny government regulating everything in our daily lives, growing the government to be able to enforce their beliefs, uncontrolled spending (despite the performative theater currently going on in the House), using their power to punish their perceived enemies over practicing good governance and relinquishing our standing as a world leader. In this, DeSantis is a personification of the new conservative, firmly in the mold of TFG.

I seriously doubt that conservatism, as it is practiced now, will ever revert to the ideals it once professed. It is up to us old-timers to teach the young what conservatism is *really* all about, otherwise they will come to associate the movement with the likes of Charlie Kirk, Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson....

It's the moderate Democrats and independent voters who are the true conservatives these days. The Republicans are reactionary wolves dressed in conservative sheep costumes.

Why is the background for that Newsmax program a picture of a city skyline? Don't their viewers hate the urban elite?

Great piece as always from Amanda, this time about Nikki Haley. I agree that Haley used a lot of words to say nothing.

If there's a federal role with respect to abortion, it doesn't involve regulation; Dobbs makes that clear. There may be a role in funding: funding contraception availability, and especially funding support for women who are pregnant, and for them and their children after birth. As a pro-life person, THAT'S the message that I want to be hearing from politicians who want to run under the "pro-life" label. And at this point in the debate, at least at the federal level, that's the ONLY message I want to hear from them. It's infuriating to never hear it from any of them.

But, but, but... that would make MY TAXES go up!!! /s

Having spent a generation singing the necessity of low, low taxes, the Republicans are hoist on their own anti-tax petard. Your vision of what federal funding should be going toward in order to reduce abortion is spot on, but they simply can't sell it and win election.

Oh, you're sweet! I live in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, and while I have two living sisters, neither of them is named "Ginny". For that matter, I doubt that your brother is named "Aloysius", either, but it's nice to know you. 😃

When I was in school, what I wouldn't have given for "Alan" to have been my name! But in Portuguese "Aloísio" has a very nice sound and, while it's not one of the most common Brazilian names, it doesn't seem at all strange to anyone, either. I'm finally in the right place.

Great essay on Disney and DeSantis. I think D-minor is perilously close--maybe there now--to criminal extortion. "Nice piece of land you got there, Mouse. Be a shame if anything happened to it. Like, you know, a state prison . . ."

I found the Haley piece to have a nonsense conclusion. The question is not weeks and exceptions, the only question is are women human beings with the same rights to freedom and autonomy as men or are they property of the state who are told what to do. They are the only human being in this argument. A fetus is not a living human being until it can survive separate from the woman. At that point the fetus should have some consideration but it should not be considered as greater or more important than the woman. These decisions are few, removal of the fetus to save the life of a woman is still a decision to be made by the woman consult ing with her physician and is not the business of the government. If a fetus is healthy and viable then its survival must be considered but the only time the woman should be sacrificed to save a fetus is if she chooses. The anti-choice right portrays women as capricious and callous creatures that must be forced by law to bear children. The operative word here being forced. This is wrong.
