See the difference?

Name the perfect candidate. 🙄

Trump projects his shadow onto everyone he does not like. Read his critiques of others and learn what's true (and denied) about himself.

Regarding this Trump quote, cited by Andrew: “I believe it is very important that Kamala Harris pass a test on Cognitive Stamina and Agility. Her actions have led many to believe that there could be something very wrong with her . . . Also, she is slow and lethargic in answering even the easiest of questions.”

Throughout his adult life (i.e. not just since 2016), Donald Trump has projected his own fears and shortcomings onto others. This is textbook shadow--in the Jungian sense--in which an individual, organization, or nation denies what is true about itself and accuses others of whatever it is.

Here's Trump's quote one more time with an appropriate revision: “I believe it is very important that I pass a test on Cognitive Stamina and Agility. My actions have led many to believe that there could be something very wrong with me . . . Also, I am slow and lethargic in answering even the easiest of questions.”

I know this isn't really feasible, but I'd like to see Harris come out of the gate swinging at Baier. I think she should open with asking him who won the 2020 election. I just think that would put him back on his heels and set a tone that works to her advantage.

Finally! the front page of the LA Times is talking about Trump's "escalating, violent rhetoric"! Long overdue.

I can't believe you didn't note the Harris campaign ad Old Don made last night:

It was perfect!!!!!!! I can't believe they did this!!! It almost feels like TFG was trolling his own followers.

Social media weirdos like Musk have helped warped maleness. This alpha, beta, soy boy crap is so pathetic and weak. America's full of screen jocks who can't get a date, and they blame others for their pathetic state. So, that makes them a natural fit for MAGA.

MAGA and The Oathbreaker are anti-American to the core. The DNC and Harrison-Walz campaigns should, in my opinion, hammer this in every public statement, political ad, and podcast.

Tocqeuville's analysis remains astute.

She's ready. The kick down the stretch will be awesome. The runner will break free. One tip, use a trump tactic and filibuster the Baier interview with open invitation to 45 to debate. Insist that he call in live during the interview. Pound that. Be aggressive and sprint to the tape.

Of course, women will ride in to save the day in America. Why? In three words: MAGA is misogyny. Their favorite candidate is a sexual predator. Two of right wing SCOTUS have been credibly accused of sexual predation. Rape is practically enshrined … if it produces (white) babies. Men like Trump wear makeup and hides behind a torrent of words; Harris stands up and speaks truth.

Joe Rogan has so much more upside for Harris because it’s a more comfortable format and the crowd that listens to Rogan is a more persuadable crowd because many of them are very mercurial.

Fox News with Bret Baier is gonna be nonstop barrage of immigration and inflation questions. He’s gonna try to trap her constantly and even if she avoids the trap it won’t look smooth on her part.

Bret Baier is actually one of the better, and more fair, Fox hosts. Of course, that's a pretty low bar with Fox.

Baier probably has more of a risk with this interview than Harris does. The bar has been set so low for her by Trump that all she really needs to do is show up and be normal. OTOH if Baier is perceived as even remotely a squish on anything the MAGA hounds will pounce.

I kind of disagree. He’s been a hack for a long time but they pretend he’s the fair one.

They have very fair good people at Fox like Bill Hemmer but they shrink in numbers by the year.

VP Harris was a prosecuting attorney. She's used to facing adversaries – and we can expect she'll do her homework on Baier.

She's good at attacking adversaries - she's not very good in the parry or the pivot..

Off topic: anyone else have trouble signing in to Bulwark today? I finally got in by signing in to the main Substack site.

Expand full comment

I have experienced trouble signing in on a few occasions. I used to be able to sign in using my Bulwark password, but that doesn't work anymore. I'm not sure why, but the sign in process appears to be routing me through Substack, and my Bulwark passcode or username isn't recognized. So then I exit back to thebulwark.com, and then just request an email link to finish the sign in 🙄. Passwords are nearly useless now that so many layers of verification are required to enter many sites. There are a few I have given up trying to access.

All of a sudden, YouTube wouldn't sign in as well. I ended up restarting the computer. Back to normal. Something went bonkers!

Bill's real estate in today's newsletter is his best since joining The Bulwark, thanks to his bringing Toqueville's observations on American women to the fore.

I have, since my tour of military service in the late 60's and early 70's, worked in many and varied jobs: door-to-door sales, construction, newspaper reporter, furniture mover, bartending, city bus driver...but mostly, thanks to my military training as a medic and the Army's advanced medic training equivalent to a vocational/practical nurse, in nursing, eventually becoming an RN. My immediate supervisors in every profession I tried my hand at were men, with the exception of nursing. And in nursing my immediate supervisors were, without exception, women. And in 40+ years of employment, the worst of my women bosses was better than the best of the men in all those other fields. Aside from my wife, my dearest friend is a woman, and, yes, she was my immediate supervisor at the hospice where I was employed when I retired from the work force.

Alexis de Toqueville was dead on the money in his assessment of the female species: An intelligent woman is exactly what America needs as president at this point in time. Kamala Harris is vastly superior to her opponent in her demeanor and especially so in intelligence. I don't see how America can or will survive a second Trump presidency.

There is this take that going on Fox and Rogan is a sign that Harris doesn't have it locked up. But others have expressed the view that it's a sign of confidence that she has the base locked up. Time will tell.

Reading about the dance party, I can't help but wonder what the chatter would have been like if a Democrat declined questions in favor of sharing a playlist. The tweets at the bottom suggest a spokesperson who looks like Malcolm McDowell tied to a chair.

This election may force us to recognize some very unfortunate things about our society. 80 million americans voting for a miscreant like Trump means 80 million of us are not good people.

Most of them are part of a cult. It's as simple as that.

I dealt with that in 2016. Over it now.

I'd say most are good people in their circle, but they're people who have no thinking abilities beyond their very small circle. I caught Morning Joe before taking Nomi for a walk. The WSJ said that Harris will be much better for the economy than Trump. Yet those people who keep saying they're voting for Trump because of the economy have blinders on.
