We were always going to get an asshole in charge of the house so long as MAGA became the defining bloodline of the Republican party. The upshot of getting Scalise over Jordan is that Scalise seems to be behind continuing military aid to Ukraine whereas Jordan definitely was not. That's literally the only upshot though. Expect all the other usual assholery that comes with having MAGA in charge of any part of the government.

Jordan honestly makes me wonder how he ties his shoes in the morning sometimes. Scalise doesn't strike me as a moron, though he's also been considerably lower profile than Jordan. And Scalise seems to have some basic organizational competence.

So... at least somewhat smarter, potentially more competent, and a hair less committed to the stupidity and more self-serving. I give it the war/pandemic test, I'll take the guy who might actually find a way to be useful over the guy who we know will basically pick the dumbest decision at every branch of the decision tree.

Don't forget that it was Scalise's brilliant whip counting that got McCarthy into lots of trouble. He's not that sharp a tool either.

I used to live in Louisiana. Scalise sucks bigtime.

I still do! In New Orleans. Lots of people here call him The Klansman

For a job that does actually matter I'll take dumb over dumber.

The only reason to favor Scalise over Gym Jordan is aid to Ukraine.McCarthy was selected in 15 ballots. What is the over/under for the next speaker? (15 ballots)

It will either be very quick (1 or 2 if the GoP miraculously gets their shit together) or more than 15.

Yes, but: We don’t even have Scalise yet, and it’s not clear we’re going to get him. We may well end up w/Patrick McHenry as “extended temporary” Speaker. No, I don’t know how that works either.

Ahhh, the Charlie Sykes theory of McHenry continuums. I like it.

Honestly if I was compelled to lay down money, settling on McHenry would be my bet at this point.

Some of them would rather always be screaming in opposition (preferably in full makeup on Fox) than actually doing the hard work of governing, so yeah, that scenario is perhaps not as implausible as it appears.

I live in hope for such an outcome! MAGA needs to climb back into the dustbin of fascist history.

If Ukraine support is the only green shoot of a Scalise speakership, I'll take it. I know, right. Lowest of low bars.

Agree with you, Jane. But at this point we don't know what Scalise is promising behind closed doors to nail down floor votes. It seems the only policy the Rs can agree on is that Ds must get screwed at all times. If Democrats want Ukraine aid, Ukraine gets screwed.

Good point. Let's wait and see what kind of drug deal he's making.

Sames tbh. Something is better than nothing.

A shit sandwich or shit sandwich with cheese? That's what it feels like here.

And yes, I stole that from a Bulwark commenter from awhile back. So thank you!

Since Scalise is from Louisiana, I think it'd have to be crawfish tails on that shit sandwich.
