My conclusion is that the Harris campaign could unite the party and catch fire in a way the Biden campaign cannot and will not. But being resigned to losing is so demoralizing and pathetic I cannot stand it. I am just a ball of rage. It feels like democrats are forfeiting an election that supposedly has existential consequences to our democracy.

Ball of rage describes me pretty well right now too. I am just apoplectic at how many Democrats seem fine with charting a course to defeat. Watching Jaime Harrison tweet about how they totally have to do the early roll call vote (which they totally don't!) is the latest thing that has me boiling over, but there are just so many things. I don't understand how they can talk about it in these existential terms and then not do everything to maximize the chance of winning.

I feel exactly like you.

[Sarcasm] Do you think the MAGATS would understand, or be able to find some equanimity if Joseph Robinette Biden ordered the DOD to arrest DJT, let's say, next week, charging him with sedition/treason, and forthwith putting him in front of a military tribunal, post haste. This is what DJT claims he wants to do with Liz Cheney and others.

Wouldn't the MAGATS be able to understand the ambitious and the full weaponizarion of the Executive Branch that their demigod so badly desires?

Let's really air our the dirty laundry of the cockroaches (mixed metaphors and all) that set the Proud Boys et al, on the halls of Congress to try and thwart a legal and legitimate election?

[Not sarcasm]

Why the hell not? It's messy. It's overreach. It's outrageous. It's groundbreaking.

Isn't this what the MAGATS have been doing to this country since DJT came aboard?

Why be sober and careful? Seriously? We haven't really tried to Fuck 'em up. Don't scoff. What's to lose? Don't they deserve it?

Agree the Harris campaign can catch fire and that being resigned to lose is demoralizing and pathetic. I'm a Democrat who is not forfeiting the election. I agree with JVL that because the margins are narrow, we have to prepare for the worse outcome, but we have to do so while actively supporting the Dem candidate.

Biden is so stubborn that I'm afraid he'll both refuse to step down and refuse to safeguard our country in any meaningful way against a second Trump term.

It would appear that's exactly what he's doing. I'm so angry.

But. That IS over.

It is time to tuck whatever anger and disappointment and despair we may have away (but bitter upset "sessions" are absolutely necessary among friends or therapist or wherever you unload) and do whatever we need to do to get Biden elected.

That's the path. I know friends who are furious about Gaza - they are putting it aside to take this on with full effort. They understand that their only chance for their viewpoint is to have a President in a democracy to battle with. We will disagree on so much, but Project 2025 means there will be no livable climate in the too near future. And there is too much else.

I don't like all of Biden's policies or ideas. I do believe he will keep this democracy intact. And if he can't function Kamala can and will do just fine. He has a good team.

Do one of these podcasts/writings on Project 2025 educate everyone you know. When Americans learn of this they do not like it (unless they are too invested in MAGA). Fight to get the working class back invested in this country. and more..

That link helped me come to terms with letting go of the "Kamala will save us" scenario. Time to set aside my anger at Biden and give him all I've got.

I agree. All of those who belive Biden and Harris should be reelected need to spend time exposing those behind 2025 and what would happen if Trump wins. There is an excellent article in The New Yorker that gives this info. Our democracy would no longer exsist.

Per Axios, the DNC is working with the Biden campaign to effectively cement Biden as the nominee via this "virtual rollcall" coming up in a mere couple of weeks. I'm on board with you in that a Harris campaign feels like the most tenable way to defeat Trump. That said, the party establishment and Biden himself are digging in their heels at the prospect. We truly need more and more elected Dems providing the data to Biden on how he's faring in the swing states.

Expand full comment

The strategic challenge with Biden not running is how does he justify being president until January 2025? It is no longer a hedge against a health event. We already saw it. I think that's why he's staying. No one is taking the presidency away from him — and he's lost elections before. Note: none of this is directed at the country. It's all about him.

I just want to scream too. The majority of Dems in Congress think he is going to lose. 1/2 of Democratic voters want another candidate. And Biden is trailing Senate candidates in the same state everywhere. Elected Democrats who think Biden is going to lose need to speak up now! Otherwise, they're just the inverse of the GOP. Just go along with it and don't make waves.

I go back and forth between rage, despair, and resignation on a minute to minute basis. I'm not sure how I'm going to make it to November like this, let alone 4 (?) years -- assuming this isn't the last election.

Of course I will vote no matter who the D is, but I think my phone is going to be turned off on election night and I'll be watching one of my favorite movies or something. Maybe I will take the whole week off from work and challenge myself to see how long I can go before I find out the election results. A last hurrah for the before times, if you will.
