Let's hear it for the Bulwark's Hannah Yoest for turning what could have been a hum-drum bar graph into an absolute work of art. The legend had me in tears, with each Comer head representing two appearances on Fox News. Chef's kiss.

The little Comer heads were hilarious...

I laughed several times at the same chart, almost wheezing myself into a coughing fit.

Let's hope voters in swing districts across the country are tired of the GOP dysfunction and want to have the house actually govern again...

I’m in one of those Biden districts that has a MAGA rep. (OR 5). The amount of money being spent in this race is astounding. The airwaves are saturated; mailers every day. Doing what I can in terms of donating, door knocking, and pestering all friends and acquaintances to vote.

THANK YOU!

lol. It’s just amazing how dysfunctional the Republican Party is, whole cloth, and yet it makes almost difference to elections. What does that teach the next politicians? Don’t do anything. You won’t be punished for doing nothing but if you do something than your screwed.

And after all of the shenanigans of the last two years of House Republican leadership, Democrats lead in the generic ballot is only 1 1/2 points!

Expand full comment

Yep which basically means tied with gerrymandering.

That’s my point. The system…fuck it…the voters, at least 45% of them don’t want the government to work. I just don’t know how you break that mindset without fundamentally crashing the system and then saying “how do you like it now?” If I thought that could work I would actually do it but I think they will just blame immigrants or poor people.

They are duly bought in. How do you run a country when you have to spend 2 billion dollars every 4 years to reach like 1m people in 6 states? wtf

I see Chris Cillizza has a new book out. My brother has read some of it and says it is truly amazing how dumb a lot of house Republicans are! Of course with MTG, Gaetz, Boebert leading the way, what can you expect.

Our “moderate “ Congressman Mike Lawler after months of those nothing burger hearings voted to proceed with an impeachment inquiry into Biden.

Also, Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher refused to join House Republicans in impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, arguing that taking such extreme action “in the absence of criminality lowered the bar.” Additionally, shortly after that vote he chose not to run for re-election because of death threats against his family. Lawler voted to impeach.

Authoritarians use intimidation and threats of violence to accrue power.

The next time you watch video of the House Oversight Committee, see if you notice what I think I see. Considering that he is chairman of a committee, Comer appears to lack expertise in the details parliamentary procedure. So when he momentarily appears lost, he is immediately given whispered counsel by Minority Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, sitting beside him. This he appears to accept without hesitation.

Yeah, he lacks expertise in thinking.

I don't mind so much that Rep Comer was/is a waste of space. What angers me the most is that we, the taxpayers, paid for his Great Adventure. I'm sure he has solidified his standing among the majority of the republican caucus who do not want to govern.

Reminding us yet again that whatever they say,Republicans have no interest in fiscal responsibility.

The "Freedom Caucus" is going to go down in history as a collection of some of the most abusive, scurrilous, ignorant, and unserious political hacks to ever inflict themselves on the country, and James Comer is their poster child. Of course, if Trump wins, they'll all probably become Cabinet members - and Comer his Cheif of Staff (spelling deliberate). That's how bad - and ridiculous- things have gotten.

Not just in our federal Congress, they're creating sturm und drang in state houses everywhere.

The radical freedom caucus in Missouri is so effective, almost no bills get passed at all!

One could almost hear the continual Comer cry, “C’mon guys, we have to impeach SOMEBODY!”

Hunter Biden's conduct left something to be desired . . . but seriously, isn't it a bit rich for defenders of Trump to be protesting efforts to market the "Biden brand"? Trump's business seems to consist of little more than slapping his brand on cheesy products . . . and trying to put it on the side of buildings in Moscow, Riyadh, and other such havens of liberty.

Projection. It's always projection with these guys. Every accusation is a confession.

"But while Comer did not succeed in impeaching the president, he did succeed in fulfilling what was arguably the primary purpose of the Oversight Committee under his leadership: content creation for his fellow GOP lawmakers and conservative media."

IMO, Comer had at least another top priority: auditioning to be a talking head in Right wingnut media if/when he gets tossed out of the House by his constituency for his unproductive asshat antics. He has spent considerably more time as a MAGA apologist than concerning himself with being an effective civil servant for the voters who elected him.

"Within days of the announcement, Comer launched a “probe” into Walz’s alleged connections to China and the Chinese Communist Party."

And as a good RINO should, he has ignored the *open* connections between the Trump [sic] family and the CCP. One of the most glaring examples is the number of patents that Ivanka was awarded:

"The Chinese government granted 18 trademarks to companies linked to President Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump [16 to Ivanka and two to TFG] over the last two months, Chinese public records show, raising concerns about conflicts of interest in the White House.

In October, China’s Trademark Office granted provisional approval for 16 trademarks to Ivanka Trump Marks LLC, bringing to 34 the total number of marks China has greenlighted this year, according to the office’s online database. The new approvals cover Ivanka-branded fashion gear including sunglasses, handbags, shoes and jewelry, as well as beauty services and voting machines [voting machines?!?!? Perhaps these should be swapped in for the machines from Dominion and Smartmatic which are so easily hacked by our enemies... like China.] https://apnews.com/article/0a3283036d2f4e699da4aa3c6dd01727

"These figures suggest Comer’s real job is not oversight but peddling accusations against President Biden to a friendly television network with a massive audience eager to believe the very worst about their Democratic foes."

No offense, Mr Perticone, but this seems like something that came from Capt Obvious. Comer is a MAGA tool to be used to create and/or reinforce the bovine scat being peddled by the New GOP -- a job he apparently relishes.

-----

"So there’s been precious little oversight of the government itself, much less problems in the country that require sustained congressional attention."

Rep Raskin, are you suggesting that those on the other side of the aisle -- whether on the "Oversight" committee or any other committees -- and on the House floor to actually do what a legislator is expected to do? That would take real work and risks pissing off Dear Leader, both anathema to the RINOs.

-----

"Maybe Comer’s media work has been just one big audition."

See above.

One reason the Walz "probe" did not catch on was because lots and lots of people of all political stripes have family members who have taught English in China or who have done so themselves. Comer was an idiot to think he could simply holler" Chinese communist ties" based on such a flimsy pretext.

“ most successful investigations in recent congressional history”. It’s fascinating to me how they just say whatever they want like it’s fact. They haven’t learned that saying something doesn’t make it true. It’s like the judge in the Alex Jones case who peddled that Sandy Hook was fake who said (paraphrasing) ‘just because you believe it to be true doesn’t make it so’. The GOP is so divorced from reality and increasingly so that when the truth finally catches up to them (and it will), they will be so confused for a bit until they process they’ve been lied to. Some never do come back. When the tariffs lead to runaway inflation, the factories don’t come back on line - or there isn’t anyone to work in them because of anti-immigrant policies, etc. they’ll be scratching their heads.

I can't decide whether Comer comes off more like a small town insurance agent or a small town used car salesman. Either explains the convenient absence of ethics.
