Trump said:"And to those who broke the law, you will pay." Does that preclude him from granting pardons? Or, have they"paid" even if their incarceration time was less than the full sentence? And, instead of a pardon, should he consider "commutation" for time served which leaves the conviction in place?

Just like the Beer Hall Putsch 101 years ago, which also failed until it succeeded, the lionization of J6 will not stop with pardons for the perps. How long before Trump forces Congress to erect a Mahnmal der Bewegung at the equivalent of the Feldherrnhalle, the site of the insurrection: the U.S. Capitol? With special recognition for MAGA "martyrs" like Ashley Babbit. If you think it can't happen here, you are sadly mistaken - it already has.

Any Senator who chooses to support the current string of Trump nominees without biting scrutiny and a deep search for the truth is simply acting out of cowardice. I have never understood why the people we elect to Congress look at their positions as a job they must keep at all costs rather than as the duty of a citizen to work in service to our country. Getting re-elected should never be a consideration in doing the work of a representative of the people. Doing what is right, standing up for and speaking the truth, honoring the oath of office to support and defend the Constitution of the United States - this is the honorable work that should drive the people we elect. Do not hasten to state that I am naive. Rather, understand that representing our fellow citizens is deeply noble work if one truly honors their oath of office. It is the noble work to which we all are called as citizens of this country if we want to continue to live in a democratic republic.

Many of the podcasts and newsletters of the past couple weeks have been focused rightly on the legal intimidation which the steaming orange stool and his authoritarian dingleberry lickers are already employing with obvious success. In addition, it is right to highlight the craven financial rationalizations with respect to Bezos and other collaborators like him who have bowed down to kiss the ring proactively. That being said, it all pales in comparison to the most insidious aspect of where we have already been for quite some time: Physical intimidation and legitimate concerns for the safety of oneself and one's family. These visceral fears are at the root of why Trump was NEVER held accountable by lawmakers (Lindsey Graham, getting physically intimidated in the airport by a bunch of rabid orangutans after he bravely stood up to condemn Trump after January 6 is one example that comes to mind).

I agree with Tim on the importance of not giving up, of hope, of participating in an engaged, proactive resistance, using peaceful and legal means. But we must be brutally honest with ourselves that very soon power of the federal government will be wielded to create the possibility, of serious and real threats of physical violence to anyone who stands up or speaks out. The steaming orange turd is going to pardon the apes who did his bidding on January 6. This will give license to a countrywide sense of legitimate immunity to a bloody Red wave of vigilante violence. Although I suspect the MSNBC mouthpiece legal machine was a factor in Mika's apology about David's drunk reference to the nominee for secretary of defense, another significant factor in Joe and Mika's proactive pilgrimage to Marabunghole was the desire to keep themselves and their families safe from physical harm. This is no excuse, especially from people who are supposed to be examples of leadership (just like Biden pardoning his son), but when I look in the mirror and I think of my daughter, I ask myself what would I do in that situation? Fascism is already here. I think it would be a worthy use of the Bulwark's excellent platform to shine a light on the issue of physical intimidation and violence so that we can proactively consider how best to address it.

True that. On one hand I wonder if the Orange POS is levying these prior to being sworn in, because even thought he thinks he has immunity he will be measured by the law no matter the dilution and he may yet have to be nicer (this is sheer speculation, but he is a waffle bat to say the least). Best retort so far is Adam Kinzinger's response "Bring It On" followed by Bennie Thompson's as a sitting representative and, of course, Liz Cheney's. They also need to publish and release the Jan. 6 committee transcripts and flood the shelves with them. Intimidators have chosen the wrong ones to pick on this time. My opinion only.

Why is everyone talking about the Kash Patel “pick” as though firing Chris Wray without cause isn’t an issue? The FBI director is not a cabinet pick.

1. Joseph R. Biden is the president of the United States of America, and is therefore immune from prosecution for acts within the scope of his office.

2. His duties include defence of the Constitution.

3. Donald Trump has pledged to pardon the Jan 6 insurrectionists, which is giving them 'aid and comfort'.

4. Donald Trump is thus disqualified from holding office of any kind via Amendment 14 of said Constitution.

5. President Biden must therefore suspend the transfer of power, rounding up Trump and his supporters in Congress, and his team, and picks for office - the 'Hatefilled 88'.

6. Trump and his acolytes should be held incommunicado, and an interim government of unity enacted, until the Hateful 88 can be thoroughly investigated.

7. The investigation should be handled by AG Garland, which will ensure that nothing happens for 5 - 7 years, by which time Trump will be long, long 'gone'.

This may result in some short term skirmishing, but sometimes it's better to rip the Bandaid off, than play around with it.

If these people get they will do the job they were chosen for. They will break the agencies leaving holes that will allow unwanted elements into our discourse. I just hope there will be enough left to salvage when it is all said and done

Trump is a disgrace and a plague on our nation. But still he was elected president. But guess what? Resistance is fertile. Resist!

What we need from our politicians, both dem and republican is courage. Nothing more. So much lack of courage has allowed Trump to steamroll these fraidy cats. There is no republican Senator up in 2030 that has any sense to say these people ain’t qualified?

My only comment is on Trump’s “They had no choice” claim. I didn’t see the interview but I sure hope that Welker asked him what he meant by that. But based on the fact that she didn’t even ask him what crimes those that served on the January 6 committee might have committed to warrant them going to jail, I’m not optimistic.

How can people (like Ernst), who are so courageous in combat, be so cowardly in their political careers?

When a woman who is herself a victim of sexual assault actually says that she trusts that a man credibly accused of sexual assault himself will deal with this massive problem of sexual assault in the military...we know our system is broken. Ernst is also a combat veteran, and Pete has made expressly clear that he opposes women in combat.

Like most of the Congressional Republicans, they have no honor , not guts- just capitulation to Trump. What will happen if Trump ordered the military to go in and literally kill liberals who said mean, but true things about Trump. Who would stand up to that? I mean, come on, Ernst might lose her job. What's a few murders or innocent people locked up?

Between Big Lie republicans, a weak and feckless, trump sanewashing legacy media, and dems that can't sell a $30 for $5, it's o wonder trump and his gang of criminal, corrupt, drunken, drug addled, brain wormed, Russian useful idiots are about to be approved for the most important posiitons in American govt. It is disturbing at best and likely quite dangerous to what remains of American democracy, the remnants of the rule of law and the shredded Constitution. I see no good coming in the next 4 years. I can only hope that the entire admin is so incompetent that they begin to eat each other and the damage done is minimal. I will be keeping my passport nearby..

It's called the upside-down and we live in it folks. Gotta be honest the Bulwark is kinds grasping at straws here, I mean they're basically saying the sky is blue... yep trump won fair and square, J6 has been normalized for enough people, he's nominated horrible people, and it's gonna last 4 years minimum. Where's the value here Bill and Andrew? I could get this analysis PLUS invites for white supremacist activities on Xitter, why should I keep paying for you again??? Slim pickens lately guys......

This country voted him in to office again so, yeah, J6 was a success. Analysis??? Americans are not paying attention, or they're just plain stupid.

As someone who has family in DC, I now know the feeling of WW2 refugees being around Holocaust deniers. My family members there were directly affected by this insurrection on January 6, 2021. It was sinister in everyway. I had one branch of family evacuated because of the alley pipe bombs (which if I was a real conspiracy theorist would pin the planting of them on Ashli Babbitt herself because it was obviously a female jaunting around with those backpacks on the FBI tapes!?!, just sayin...she was hateful as hell). The other branch of my family was trying to get to them, but they were told to shelter in place and stay away from the windows. They also had small children so it was a pretty horrifying all around. The aftermath was awful too.....fences, wires, troops patrolling the streets weeks later...very, very, surreal....nightmares with the little ones and just general disgust. No matter what.........This really happened! So please, media? Hello? Any of you truly fact bearing media, you need to flood the airwaves with replays and even broadcast from start to finish of this truly evil event....everthing! Even the shit turds left in Statuary Hall. This is tragic. This is outrageous.
