Dear Charlie, I’m consumed with curiosity as to what brings you to Asheville (I live nearby). Especially if you have any public events there this weekend. It would amaze my ten year ago self that two of my favorite writers are now you and David Frum!
Awesome interview. A guy I thought was so far to the right and yet we now find common ground, like you Charlie. It’s so great there is The Bulwark-for democracy
Friends and neighbors, get out your highlighter pen and note this from Judge Luttig's comments: "...the former president’s and his Republican Party’s denial." That's the selfsame Republican party that is casting about for the "new" Trump (Christie? DeSantis? Youngkin?) while conducting nationwide campaigns to subvert voting rights and install only those who agree to march lockstep in unison to the "leader's" command to win at all costs, regardless of who that leader may be. To Judge Luttig's credit -- hat tip to Charlie as well -- his solution to get Republicans out of this death spiral is for Republicans -- it has to be Republicans -- to step up and say country over party. So ball's in your court, Mitch and Mr. Thune, to gather up all the House Republicans that haven't yet deposited their (fill in your favorite metaphor here) in MTG's vise and take one for the bigger American team while there's still a chance to derail the coming war train.
I'd love to see a transcript or recording of Judge Luttig's remarks to UGA Law School. I can't find anything on the web. Has anyone had success finding such? Thank you, Tom Jensen
Goal #1 is knocking out Trump ASAP. This country cannot withstand another insurrection, which is a given if he’s the GOP nominee. Evangelicals are looking for an alternative to Trump. Youngkin might be acceptable to them AND center right voters—more so than Christie or DeSantis, imo. Whether we approve of him is irrelevant. He’s a tool, a means to an end. We can vote the hell out of him in the general, but first things first.
I haven't chimed in for a while, but I have to say, this was one of your best, most enlightening, yet very sober interviews with Judge Luttig. Every voting age adult in our country should listen to this interview! I listened with so many emotions racing through my mind, while waiting in my car. Judge Luttig chose his words, phrases and emphasis very carefully. There is no mistaken what he says. Our country stand at the precipice, yet so many don't realize, or care what's potentially ahead, and the importance of what every single vote will make in our next national election. I know we've been saying that for the last 3 cycles - because the stakes are too high to think about, much less contemplate.
His speaking of war was hard to hear. How is it, our country has gotten to this point!? The lust for damaging, if not destroying our democracy by the MAGA right, who, sadly, now owns the republican party is astonishing. Yet we've all witnessed this political and cultural metamorphosis take shape before our very eyes over the last 7+ years. Many of our leaders have failed us, and even endangered us, because of the constant drum beat of their MAGA gospel. A gospel of malice, hatred and power at any cost. What's good for the country is not a shared goal of our political class. It's all about who can shapes the narrative that somehow the evil dems are the problem, and Donald is our only savior! The cultural, ideology, and world view battlelines seemed to have been drawn - sadly.
One thing of note Judge Luttig said was, the chaos that has ensued over the MAGA years, and more specifically the insurrection that unfolded on 1/6, lies solely at the feet of the Republican Party. If they are defeated in November of 2024, they will deserve it. We can all hope the long arc freedom and defense of our democracy will continue to bend towards a better and more just America, and the remains of a MAGA defeat be relegated to a very short chapter of the history books.
So I listened to the interview with Judge Luttig and it was great. What I'm wondering - how do I as a subscriber get to listen to these things without being interrupted by annoying ads? There seems to be no work-around, unless I'm missing something.
I hear ya, there seemed to be an uptick in the volume of them in this podcast today. I thought we were ad free if we subscribed to the Bulwark. I am thinking about writing to Jim Swift about this....
The interview with Judge Luttig was really interesting but Charlie definitely pulled some punches.
For one, Luttig is a Scalia fanboy, but anyone with a legal education who isn't a member of the Federalist society (which incidentally still proudly features traitor John Eastman on its website as a member) knows that Scalia's "originalist" interpretation of the Constitution was always highly selective, and often absurdly cruel (for example when he issued a minority opinion on a DEATH PENALTY case, arguing that the accused only have a right to a fair trial, and that the Constitution does not prevent the State from executing factually innocent people as long as they received a fair trial). It would have been nice for Charlie to have perhaps grilled Luttig on how Scalia's disingenous jurisprudential legacy is now being wholy adopted by SCOTUS to reverse 40 years of civil rights in the current Scalia-like extremism in the Republican majority on the court.
Second, how on earth did Charlie fail to ask a single question of Luttig about Eastman or Cruz, two people that he HIRED and mentored as clerks, the former of which was the legal engineer for Trump's coup attempt, the latter of whom was one of the Senators who objected to certifying the election results AFTER the insurrection attempt on January 6.
You know who did grill him on those connections? The January 6 committee.
Imagine for a second that, say Hitler's and Goebel's mentor had been the same person, and Hitler had been stopped in his tracks after the Reichtag fire.
It would be journalistic malfeasance not to drill their mentor on their role in radicalizing those fascist.
Charlie's interview was frankly tone deaf. He makes Luttig out to be a hero, when it's pretty damn clear that whatever judicial philosophy and conservative perspective he has, ended up influencing some very evil folks to do bad things.
Your conversation with Judge Luttig was engrossing and, in the end, a public service. His sobering views, concerns and fears need to be disseminated more widely. Trump has already begun manipulating mainstream media with his narrative while the Speaker and the extremists in his caucus kowtow to the former president's every wish. There was a time in our history when the great issues of the day were debated by individuals of high intellect and oratory before the public. Instead of the rubbish spewed by Carlson and Bannon , if only there was a neutral platform for real debate by persons of Judge Luttig's caliber on both sides of an issue broadcast often. Maybe then the multitudes of Americans who do not pay much attention to current events would look up and listen. I share Judge Luttig's grave concerns and the widespread apathy that is ever present only benefits the frauds and authoritarians .

Thank you Judge Luttig, you are "spot on." My profound thanks to Mrs. Luttig as well.
ssk
What did Judge Luttig mean when he said that the rot began 25 years ago?
Really excellent conversation. Thank you!

On Russian state TV, Trump is called "a destroyer of America." And that's meant in a favorable way.

The myth of Youngkin as some kind of Centrist is some next level wishcasting.

Charlie, can you make Judge Luttig’s speech in Georgia available for us to read?
That would be wonderful. I live in a remote area with a weak connection. Streaming is a major frustration.
Judge Luttig is an exceptional person and American.
After last weekend, Jack Smith must be dancing jigs.
