On a totally unrelated note, I feel like two of my hobbies have collided - the Modern Quilt Guild has produced a quilt pattern called "Sunny Bunch". Every time I see it, it makes me smile.

I have a subscription to Picturehouse in the uk. It doesn’t mean unlimited films as obv be bonkers :) but I get ten ‘free’ films a year and access to members bar, discounted coffee etc. and as a result I do tend to always check them before considering seeing a film elsewhere (also because they’re nicer than most other places)

Sigh having said that poor picturehouse are owned by cineworld who are in financial straits. But be nice to think picturehouse be just fine on their own with their model:)

The Dallas Drafthouse news really sucks.

Also, the portmanteau you're looking for is "panopticon carne."

The more I hear about MoviePass, the less it makes sense.

In Canada, we've got something called the Cineplex Cineclub, which costs $10 per month. For that $10, you get each month: 1 free pass to a 'normal' showing, 1 $10 ticket, 20% off concessions, and a free Cineplex Store movie rental if you purchase concessions.

It seems to me like the perfect kind of offer. The company loses a bit of money on snacks and tickets, but gets me into the building more often (at least once per month), and gets me to buy snacks every time. And as a married parent, I usually drag 1-5 people along with me.

Exactly, the company gives away a little and probably recoups it in additional tickets and concession stand sales from the people you, as you put it, drag along with you. The Movie Pass scheme seems like they were trying to "give away the store".

I found the movie pass movie interesting in the fact that from day 1, it was promising something that they couldn't deliver in the long term. Even if the company wasn't taken over by a grifter and his accomplice, I think their business plan was unsustainable in the long run.
