Hint to the The Bulwark store: assuming it is legally permissible, all your tRump (or perhaps refer to him by his indictment number P01135809) mug shot t-shirts should have jail cell bars with his little scrawny hands clutching them superimposed on the mug shot. Just a thought....

You're right. These that are available don't really tap into the real point. I'd buy your mug. Great suggestion!

The New York Times and Harvard and Yale are liberal only in the sense that the media keep repeating that they're liberal. It's meaningless blather. They're all just groups of wealthy people who are making a lot of money. They've lead the charge in smearing the 9/11 families and sending America down a path of cowardice and mendacity because it was easy and it was lucrative, our soldiers be damned. They have no ideology.

I'm just curious. Given that you've marketed yourselves as a "Bulwark" against the greatest threat to our democracy that our country had ever seen, how do you justify profiteering off of that dire threat's mugshot? Especially because his supporters are doing the same thing. Is it because you are Very Unserious People, or is it simply Horseshoe Theory at work?

It's an ' eye of the beholder ' thing. In a more logical world, his ridiculous 'fashion' mug shot would be a derisive point of humor making fun of his utter stupidity. Hence, the use on merchandise.. In the eyes of the the conditioned, ignorant Republican viewers of Fox Noise, it serves its intended purpose of seeming determined and vengeful. So they, too, put it on merchandise. Maybe it's gonna turn out better for the Trump supporters than the Trump mockers, but that sort of mockery wouldn't even have been questioned in an earlier period. We just live in an upside down world today.

I too was surprised/disappointed....but we do live in capitalist society...C.R.E.A.M

Blaming The Bulwark's blatant grifting on capitalism is peak Bulwarkian dumbfuckery.

Also it wasn't a blame....but I can see how the without the /s as part of a comment, some can miss the sarcasm

Where is the grifting? There's a lot of great content (3 podcasts I listen to regularly, JVL's triads, Tim Miller's essays, etc.) for a lot less than I pay for my local newspaper.

Trump _was_ placed forward in the mugshot frame, when compared to the other mugshots, given the relative size of the Fulton County jail insignias. My opinion is that he was doing the bully thing of advancing on the photographer, the way he behaved on the debate stage with Hillary...

Not sure about that. All of the pictures show them looking upwards, probably to a camera situated out of reach. It's not imaginative to assume that the camera is located beyond dunking height, for equally unimaginative reasons. We are looking at a defiant 7th grader.

I'm not talking about the looking up - that was clearly choreographed - some did it more effectively than others... (this could well be in my imagination) .What I was talking abut is that he is not with his back up against the wall, he has stepped forward a step or two, facing the photographer.

I guess at over 70 I recall a time more reasonable or perhaps that was naive. Trump has the emotional maturity of a 10 yr old. In that mugshot he looks as though he practices his appearance he looks ridiculous. I am starting to wonder if a large percentage of our population are semi illiterate how can he appear competent? This is both frightening and mystifying I confess I am baffled .

I agree that it is hard for me to see his expression as anything but a failed attempt to appear resolved and powerful. He instead comes across as clearly 'mugging', uncontrollably angry, and veering towards Satanic camp.

In terms of equal justice for all: mug shots of normal criminal defendants look nothing like this. They have not had a chance rest in their own beds the night before, or dress like they were going to an office suite.

The others are exhausted after short or long interrogations, more likely looking defeated and scared. The mugshots I have seen of ordinary people are black and white.

These professionals were questioned in offices, not police stations. They were not interrogated by people wearing guns.

Equality for all: not.

Right...admittedly not every my shot d the accuse holding a number and standing in front of height lines, but these are like dmv photos or those taken at amusement parks where the park logo is preprinted on the photo paper. Sweet heavens.

And good point about the photos of regular folks being taken after any meant to be intimidating booking process!

I agree with your assessment JVL, but I can’t help but see him as the spoiled, rich, five-year-old that he actually is. Zoolander pose and all. If the GOP had a critical mass of adults in their ranks, they would have stuck him in the corner a million transgressions ago. Sure, he has a sense of the theater and all it engenders. But, in the final analysis, our only defense is the justice system and the ballot box it appears. Let’s hope that is enough this time around as well. Failure is certain death for the shared experiment formerly known as America.

"I suspect that our elite liberal institutions on balance give us the worst of both worlds: intellectually stultifying, yet lacking the courage of their convictions." Can I indulge my confirmation bias for a sec to assert I see this EVERWHERE in NY state? My family moved to NY 7 years ago from TN to much better living conditions. Better jobs, better schools, closer family, etc. I can't count the number of times since 2016 we have said, "Thank God we no longer live in TN!" And yet. Over and over, institution after institution, there is this dysfunctional, complacent commitment to old practices that make no sense and serve no purpose. The progressives are complacent and assuming. Everything from the state government to churches does it "the way we always have" in the face of people leaving in droves. We can't find doctors. We pay too much for everything because of obvious inefficiencies. I still prefer this state to most others. But wow, I wish liberals would get their act together. They aren't doing government well, and that's what we need.

All of the problems you're listing are the result of right wing efforts to ruin whatever programs anyone else is trying to implement. It has nothing to do with "the liberals".

Expand full comment

That's what I originally thought. And there is plenty of that. That's why it's so important for the liberals to avoid scoring in their own goal. Like the failure to run real opposition research on Santos. And almost losing the governorship. That's complacency. And lots of examples where the traditionally progressive institutions can do better. I say this as a supporter of them.

Expand full comment

Yeah, we can always do better. But that's different than blaming liberals for the way the rest of the country behaves. The right wing sicced Nazis on the rest of the us. That's the problem, not liberal mismanagement of the bureaucracy.

Trivial question that I keep thinking about: Why does Jenna Ellis's mugshot look like someone just gave her a puppy?

Suggestion: Next Republican debate, they should turn the camera around to show the audience and reduce the candidate who is talking to a picture-in-picture box. Because the audience is where the real story is. The voters who are eating this s*** up.

Trump mastered the art of telling them what they want to hear. If he goes down, the survivor who has best learned that technique will have an almost insurmountable advantage. What the candidates believe in their heart-of-hearts is irrelevant. Uncomfortable truths are like rat poison to a Republican candidacy.

Also, I think it unlikely that Vivek or Nikki or Tim Scott will be able to overcome the disadvantage of not being white males in Trumpworld. Not for the Presidency.

Expand full comment

My thought was if Jenna is smiling and looks her best, she can use that photo to raise money for her legal defense.

Since Trump refuses to pay for it and all.

Lol. None of these folks actually expect to go to actual state prison. Even if found guilty Trump will win, pardon them and they will dine out on the stories of defeating the evil leftist government

The Republican voters have been programmed to cheer for the attacks that their candidates make. A debate with a Republican audience is like a cage match. The substance of an argument is not important- it is showing the power to beat your opponent. Trumps mug shot looks like the billboard for a WWF event.

I commend to all Bulwark subscribers that if they haven’t already, they need to read this excellent critique of Peter Thiel and his influence on US politics - which has moved on from DJT and won’t rest with Vance but hopes to sponsor the next President https://www.amazon.com.au/Contrarian-Peter-Silicon-Valleys-Pursuit-ebook/dp/B08YR3GRQX/ref=sr_1_1?crid=S31VRWVXRPN&keywords=the+contrarian+peter+thiel+and+silicon+valley%27s+pursuit+of+power&qid=1693049168&sprefix=The+contrar%2Caps%2C306&sr=8-1

A. If you hadn’t said otherwise, I would have said Trump was the one who looks like a serial killer. The only one I could say looked good in her mug shot was Jenna Ellis; Trump just looks unpleasant.

B. I don’t care how good of a season Ohtani has; I will die on the hill that if your team cannot finish .500, you should be ineligible to win the MVP. It is the Most VALUABLE Player, not the Most OUTSTANDING Player. If your team can’t even get to 81 wins, how much value did your production really give your team?

As I believe was once said to Ralph Kiner, “We finished last with you. We can finish last without you.” Granted, the Angels couldn’t finish last because of the abominable Athletics, but the point still holds.
