We watched this when it aired. We were bursting with pride for you Charlie! It is wonderful that The Bulwark is getting so much of credit it deserves as an ACTUALLY thoughtful media source. Well done.
This is extremely useful. I’m probably a center left democrat but I also resist labels. Republicans who delude themselves in either tolerating or defending Trump and MAGA do so at both their own and our country’s risk. As my mother-in-law used to say, “show me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are.” There is a deliberate, organized, and well-funded cruelty in the right wing that needs to be fought against and defeated now. Do Republicans really want to play pat-a-cake with Putin?
Excellent interview and well informed, truthful responses by Mr. Sykes. I would imagine a great number of American citizens see things similarly. I appreciate listening to people who have studied, researched, and considered so much information as they form opinions. They represent the strength of keeping an open, curious mind while being commited to the principles of democracy.
"And I think particularly for Democrats and anti-Trump folks, it’s like, we may have a lot of differences or a lot of other things in our agendas that we’re concerned about. But we need to recognize that right now we can’t sit around and have another seminar. We can’t indulge ourselves in all of the ideological goodies that we would necessarily like. You asked, ‘and do what?’ Don’t allow anything to take your eye off the ball of this existential choice that America will make in November of 2024."
This isn't good enough. The next step cannot just be block Trump from winning the presidency and then sitting on our hands. What is this coalition supposed to accomplish with the power gained?
This coalition won in 2020 and has done little to protect American democracy, apart from reforming the electoral count act. They haven't made it harder to fire inspectors general. They haven't enacted laws to give teeth to the Emoluments Clause. They haven't reformed the laws that allowed Trump to circumvent Senate confirmation for cabinet officials. If Trump gets reelected, he will have a green light to take up where he left off four years earlier.
Congratulations on your words as answers in this specific interview Charlie! Bravo! I keep harping on the need to crush all records for voter turnout in 2024 and assuming it will give the Country a super majority!
You keep us all focused on the ball! Not just Stop The Orange one but we must secure the great prize of a Super Majority and change this Country for the better.
I really like both your lessons and Steven Beschloss' heart at the same time!
I watched it. What can I say? Charlie Sykes is The political pundit extraordinaire. The conservative Republican Party broke his heart and wounded his soul and I will never forgive them for that. Charlie reminds me of the character in Mr. Smith goes to Washington. A decent citizen who elevates what is good and just about our humanity. Thank you Margaret Hoover for providing us with the interview.
Thanks, Charlie, for pointing out that Limbaugh was a greedy, gasbag entertainer. I met him during my news career during a short dalliance with small-market television news when he visited the owner of the station, a close friend of his. I asked Limbaugh if he believed all the swill he was peddling and he said of course not. ``I’m selling soap, the more the better. Whatever it takes to get the audience in and keep them,’’ he said. This was around 1999-2000. He may have started taking himself seriously by the time Trump came on the scene, but he didn’t at that time.
I once saw Rush Limbaugh as a guest on Charlie Rose's show. I had heard Rush's radio program a few times because my mom listened to it sometimes. But he seemed like a different person with Rose. Instead of his usual appeals to the emotions, he was making intelligent, rational arguments. That's when I realized Rush is a really smart guy who knows how to size up an audience and speak to them in their own language. Unfortunately, his radio audience was not in the intellectual league of Rose's PBS audience, so he spoke to them in visceral rather than intellectual terms.

Your interview with Margaret Hoover was fantastic and the gives a rationale for The Bulwark.

Great job, Charlie!

Very powerful a

It was Charlie being Charlie!

Terrific interiew. Especially considering the current political climate, Charlie is radically thoughtful, truthful, respectful, and honorable.

You are correct once again.
Kristi? Or Cris.
