To the ignorant, uneducated, conspiracy addled, anti-vax folks in the back row, Autism wasn’t as prevalent in the past because we just thought those people were “different”.

I am 65 and I can look back at my school years now and easily tell you which kids would have been considered on the spectrum if such a thing existed back then.

100%. My daughter has autism, and I've learned a great deal more about the subject since we received her diagnosis. In sum, Autism is now viewed as a "spectrum" (hence the term "Autism Spectrum Disorder") that encompasses various degrees of severity/symptoms previously viewed as discrete conditions., such as Asperger's Syndrome. That's a large factor driving the increase in ASD diagnoses - as well as the reason my blood boils when people still try to create a link to vaccines despite that the lone study prompting this connection has been widely and thoroughly discredited.

I mean, Rosemary Kennedy probably had Autism. But instead of comprehensive treatment and evaluation her family had her lobotomized so she wouldn't embarrass them socially.

Places like Willowbrook aren't ancient history. We used to hide or ostracize conditions like autism instead of addressing them.

I read a theory about that many years ago. As example, familiar fictional characters like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer today would be considered on the spectrum and in need of treatment, as would many true characters from history, like fur trappers and many pioneers. Society used to have avenues for them to be successful in life, and they accomplished amazing things.
