In the past The GOP had a lunatic fringe (Birchers and The Minutemen come to mind), and to be fair the left had the Weather Underground. And although I've read several books and numerous articles analyzing how the GOP arrived at its current MAGA populist state even now I'll read a column in the Bulwark and still ask myself, "How on Earth did we get here? Why are there so many of our fellow citizens who need or desire authoritarian leadership?" I guess the only positive spin I can put on where we are now is that I'm living in a time that will be of great historical significance. But it's not fun.
