I suggest every D in Congress take a page from Ms Greene's book and begin impeachment proceedings against every R who has failed to live up to the oath he/she took when they entered Congress to protect/abide by the Constitution. Failing to, at a minimum, condemn the FFG is a violation of their oath of office.

LOL....that's such a good point since the D's have better cases than the R's.

Mr. Trump's behavior is so beyond the pale that you have to wonder if he wants to be disqualified from running for office, in order to regain lost attention, rouse - and financially milk - his base, and remain in the news. Swindling his base puts him in the class of evangelical and fear-mongering grifters who have found that taking advantage of the tax code regarding churches and free speech on the airwaves pays a lot more money than holding a real job.

It's like he has nothing else to lose, right?

Why is this not justification to enforce the disqualification clause of the 14th amendment?

The rot in Republicans in general is best illustrated by Milo Yannopoulos. This guy used to be loved by college conservatives. Why? He is not smart, or interesting by any legitimate definition. His shtick was always sophomoric and juvenile. A similar figure on the left would be treated like the crazy homeless guy screaming to himself in the alley. But college conservatives loved him.

Charlie, you said something in the podcast with Will Saletan to the effect of, "Trump couldn't do any worse than terminate the Constitution".

What would Trump say? "Hold by beer and watch this!"... 🙁

TFG has now TS'd denying that he said the Constitution should be terminated and blaming the Fake News for reporting that he did. Gasjighting is all he has. If he ever did shoot someone on 5th Ave. and it caused an uproar, he would deny it was his face in the video.

He would never shoot someone on 5th Avenue. Instead, he would incite or pay someone else to do it. I bet he has horrible aim and could not shoot a gun with any accuracy using both hands to begin with. He has enough useful idiots that would still believe his promises of a quick pardon.

I think Trump is just making the most outrageous statements so he can stay relevant. Each time he puts out his stupidity, we all spend hours reading or listening to them. He really needs to be in a padded room.

I'll go with sound-proof. If it has that, it can have all the sharp angles and hard edges that can be crammed into a cell.

Why is it so hard for Republican politicians to dump Trump. Now would be a good time and they would have 2 years with no elections to convince people he was never part of their party.

Expand full comment

It is probably politically wise of the Republicans not to say much. And you know? It isn’t their job to respond to Trump’s every fit and start. If they went down that road they’d spend every conversation with journalists, mainstream journalists, on Trump. If they’re trying divest themselves of him and his influence there is no value to the GOP politicians to be talking about any of it. Anything else continues to tie them closely with him.

Expand full comment

Yes, well this is major league stuff, not every little fit and start. I mean, can they at least say trying to subvert the constitution is bad?

Expand full comment

If they don’t mention his name, perhaps. I just see no percentage for them in commenting on any outrageous thing he says because he’s not going to stop. Trump does not give one Diety damn about the Republican Party and certainly not our country. It’s all about himself.

If you listen to the Focus Group even his Trumpsters and Trumpsterettes do not want him to run. Ignoring him is GOPs best bet to fade him out but retain some of his following.

Sadly, I think you are right.

That said, their feet should be held to the fire on this. He isn't some cranky old man yelling at clouds. He's the most recent GOP nominated President, he is running again, and he's got the endorsement of sitting members of the GOP house majority, including leadership.

If they want to dismiss him as someone who's gone round the bend into a bizzaro world of supporting anti-semites and calling for the dismissal of the Constitution, okay. After that, they can ignore him. There are plenty of people that can be ignored by both sides when convenient because of not really being that important, or representative, or whatever. DJT isn't one of them. They own him (as he owns them) until they make a very public split.

"Russia to Gays: Shut Up and Disappear" - how is this so different than what our radical SCOTUS is up to today? It's basically a matter of degrees.

It is now safe (and smart) to assume that R leadership who cannot, and are not condemning overthrowing the Constitution, are in favor of it.

They're not cowards, they're traitors.

(a) DeSantis will continue to play rope-a-dope for months, regardless of what TFG says. (b) As legal liabilities draw closer, TFG is reinforcing the notion that his behavior following the election is rational because he TRULY BELIEVED that he had won the election, a pathetic attempt to counter the "intent" that is necessary to prove many of the accusations against him. As well as demonstrating that he's the weird old uncle that's yelling nonsense at his TV receiver and, therefore, incapable of having the requisite "intent" to commit felonies.

I beg to differ. The Sgt. Schultz defense is "I know Nothing!" The Constanza defense is "Remember, Jerry, it's not a lie if you really believe it."

[Edited to add] Trump uses the Constanza defense. It's the rest of the party that uses the Sgt. Schultz defense. They're like the three monkeys. "See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil."
