It's ridiculous. My kids read almost all their books on electronic devices. If there is a book that they are interested in, they are more likely to order it online or from an online library. These so-called "caring moms" are so out of touch with the real world and so caught up in their false righteousness they don't see their kids laughing and rolling their eyes behind their backs.
My worry was never that my kids might read bad books, but that my kids would never read anything.

Fact: curious, intelligent people ask lots of questions.
Fact: Republicans can't let regular people do that and still get away with soaking middle-class Americans for mega-bucks to feed the beast, i.e. their billionaire donors.
This is why Republicans don't want people to read. Period.
Unrelated to Morning Shots today, but I just received a robo call encouraging me to call Rep. Lawler's office and ask him to do whatever he needs to do to prevent a government shutdown and stop this fake impeachment. So some D organization is on it! Mike Lawler, of course, has been enjoying his 15 minutes of CNN fame for bashing the Freedom Caucus. But I don't buy his moderate persona. Once this crisis passes you can be sure he'll find a way to get himself back on Fox.
How about some interviews, even extensive investigations, of persons, especially grass-roots types. who urge the purge? I have always engaged with conservatives (not that these people will fit any model of a conservative) and found such exchanges heuristic, discovering something each time about my own thinking. What can we learn from these people?
My daughter is a junior in college. She has wanted to be a teacher since the 9th grade. She did Future Educators and the whole bit. This year she changed her major...left education. Why? Two reasons. She didn't want to have to ignore/not help kids struggling with their identity/sexuality/gender and she didn't want to get shot. She would have been an amazing teacher. She didn't feel like people wanted her to be her best, authentic self and help kids. How sad is that. If she wrote a book about it, kids would never read it because it would probably be banned. Let's leave politics out of libraries. We should celebrate it when kids want to read. #readingispower
As a child my favorite thing to do was go to my aunts house and read all of her trashy romance novels. She had no children and happily shared the treasure trove. I became a rabid reader because of them.... they were smutty but shockingly I turned out just fine. The kids are missing out. Sad
When Fox describes opponents of heartbeat bills as “Escalating a War on Babies” I doubt your response would be “Eh, hyperbole.” Charlie Sykes is a better commentator than this. And in his defense the actual section heading (as opposed to the email subject line) was “The War on Books.” That’s more whet I would expect from Sykes.

that said, if those evil hags at Moms For Liberty want to start banning books due to being sexually offensive or age inappropriate, then the book known as The Old Testament better be on that list. Here are some highlights--

--Lot's daughters apparently got dear old Dad drunk AF and decided to, as the kids say, ride that thang...
--David and Jonathan, heir to King Saul of Judea, had an extremely ambiguous relationship (remember the part when Prince J strips down M'er-F'ing naked in front of David and gave him all his stuff?). Additionally, there was a roughly 10 year age gap between the 2 [about 30 for D & 18/19 for J]--David being the older. (Huh? What was that? Did one of you just whisper "groomer"?)
So, if Hags For Authoritarianism want to encourage book banning and possibly book burning, then fine. However, like I said, the OT better be on the list because by HFA's own criteria, the Old Testament is both extremely offensive to children & super inappropriate for them to be reading.

No, Will, restoring Roe is NOT the "Pro-Life Case" for anything. At best, your presentation is perhaps a place where a constructive discussion can start, but there no way that discussion ends with a return to the status "Roe" ante. At worst, it's a naïve -- and unsuccessful -- attempt to present abortion on demand with a human face.
It took fifty years of struggle to get abortion put back under state jurisdiction; don't expect many kudos, even from those of us who agree with you on the priorities of contraception, pre-natal care, and support for mothers and children, but also believe that's where it belongs, and from where it never should have been removed in the first place.
Let's not give Haley too much credit for being "moderate" on abortion. So she thinks women shouldn't be jailed? Well, for 50 years, reproductive choice was protected by the Constitution, so the fact that "whether or not women should be jailed for an abortion" is even a question, shows how off the rails this issue has become since Dobbs. Access to contraception? AYFKM???? Why is this even up for debate?????
And frankly, "pro-choice," letting women decide what's best for them (oh, the horror! /s) has always been the "pro-life" position, because it actually saves women's lives. The political "pro-life" position of outlawing abortion is cruel and harmful to women, and has always been anti-freedom.
A sadly vanishing number of people actually read books. It would be so beneficial for all brains to read something - literally anything - instead of zoning out in front of videos.
