In the coverage of The Last Duel that I’ve seen so far, I’m a bit surprised to see no mention of Ridley Scott’s first feature film, The Duellists. Napoleonic War era swordsmen, not medieval knights, but he’s been doing lethal combat challenges for close to half a century. The Duellists is simply gorgeous. Best Debut at Cannes in 1977

I've seen a handful of folks talk about THE DUELLISTS but I honestly don't have a super-strong opinion on it. Haven't seen it since it was on HBO or Showtime or something back when I was in high school.

Sonny...Assigned Viewing: The Duellists. But I guess if it didn't make that much of an impression the 1st time around, probably wouldn't the 2nd time either. I saw it not long after it came out and have caught it a couple of times since. The last duel / end sequence kind of stuck with me all these years. Not sure why, but my favorite shot of the film is Feraud standing stock still on that hill, contemplating his past, future or whatever you want to make of it. The look on Keitel's face I thought was the definition of grim and hopeless. And the shot made him look utterly alone and cut off from the world. Liked it pretty well. Just my take on it...

I loved the first 1.5 hours of Last Duel but didn't care for the last hour. I really like her as an actress but I thought her story kind of went off the rails.

See, I think seeing the little differences from her POV really made it work (e.g., her shoes falling off as she flees up the stairs rather than her deliberately taking them off in front of Le Gris). And the actual duel was freaking great. Just really well done action.

That's a good point about the shoes. I assumed they're recollections wouldn't be as similar as they were. I thought he would remember her teasing him and being docile or something or even a completely wrong recollection and she would show the truth in her final pov but I like the way you put it that it was in the really small details was cool.

The Duel was awesome but I really liked the first introduction of her perspective. (She was the brain behind the manor and all that) and by the time you get to the duel the perspective stuff doesn't matter as much anymore.

I might have been wrong to use the term I did the other day. I for the most part really liked it.

Well done review of Last Duel. Also, have seen BHD a couple of times. Good pic. Think the strengths and recognizability of Shepard, Sizemore and the other older cast members made the performances of the younger ones more poignant and believable. Cripes, has it really been 20 years? Tempus fugit, for sure!

Last Duel sounds amazing. I didn't love the trailer but it sounds really cool.
