As a black man who’s been on the planet for 53 years, I know America well enough to know she faith people have in her has a potential candidate will slip away if she’s the actual candidate. And that’s among actual democrats….let alone independents and former traditional republicans.

Agree that Harris should be out front a lot more. And Biden should be running on the strength of his entire administration vs the clown show Trump had in office.

I also think publicly trying to force Joe out is like announcing to your dad’s friends, family and on social media that you want to take his keys away. That should have all been done privately.

Yes, this is a family discussion. I say this as a lifelong Dem and small donor - you know, one of the non-elites? But there was no private way to have it.

All true.

I highly recommend you listen to the most recent Ezra Klein interview with Dana Goodyear (came out last week) who did a huge profile of Kamala.

Apparently she invites the press to go with her to events on Air Force 2 but they never go because she (and Biden) can’t breakthrough in this media environment

1) At least she can communicate her case, and if Biden can't (as suggested by his lack of public appearances) then he becomes a very bad bet for beating Trump.

2) Biden running on the past is dodging the issue of what he can do in the present and future, which is the actual subject under discussion.

3) Joe Biden isn't our dad, he's the president of the United States. He's a public servant, and if he isn't the best person to serve the public in this moment, it is the responsibility of the public to hold him accounatble for that.

I've been cautiously optimistic about Biden 2.0. I've had my skepticism, but was ready to be sold on his prospects with a vigorous debate performance...

Biden didn't lose me with The Debate. But he *is losing me* over his post-debate response. It's simply inadequate to soften the impact of his abysmal performance. And it's been negative, selfish, arrogant, and detached. The Democratic Party should be concerned with how non-partisans that they depend on to win are not sold on this. They're not going to tow the party line. And should Biden lose, it will further damage the party, not to mention America as we know it.

Agree, Rebecca.

How do you know it hasn't been done privately?

Biden is taking the country over a cliff. He publicly challenged his detractors to go public themselves with their opposition. That is where we are at.

I think/ hope that many have done this privately, but he is not listening. Putting the country first requires them to call publically for Biden to step down. Because of questions about his own fitness, Biden is the wrong guy to make the case against Trump. He can't win. For those who agree with the Bulwark writers, here is a petition that has been started.

The part that seems crazy is Trump is definitely not fit. And it isn’t even a topic. It’s not an ideal choice but the idea that between the two, voting for Trump or not voting at all and being ok with what Trump is proposing is wild. If Dems are that stupid, the country will get what is deserves.

Thanks, Ed M

You nailed it.

Also, posts like this from Kristol et.al., are guilty of a “self-fulfilling prophecy.” They drive people's opinion more than the lousy debate performance and Biden’s normal aging.

Bill and Tim actually talked about this on yesterday's pod. Their argument is that swing voters are also the lowest information voters, whose opinion isn't driven by Kristol et. all. The people reading this stuff are people who are going to vote for the Dem ticket no matter what.

Thank you, Rebecca. I am not sure that is the case, but I understand its reasoning.

No worries--they did an interesting discussion of the criticisms in that pod, and Tim said he's hoping to have someone on today who will argue the case for Biden staying more fully, so you should probably keep an eye out for that!

When does the Bulwark podcast usually drop? I've been refreshing the link for the last hour. I want to know if my prediction on who it would be is correct. Tim said the only criterion was somebody with political experience, no so-called influencers, which is exactly right, IMO. I think it will be Simon Rosenberg. This am, Ezra Klein dropped a discussion from last Friday with NYT columnist Jamelle Bouie who has been making some of the strongest arguments against Biden dropping out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyUXGLCU-y8&list=PLdMrbgYfVl-szepgVpArP0obwYgbKdfvx&index=1). Maybe him?

Thank you. I’m so weary of the constant media and pundit focus on removing Biden as our candidate. The Bulwark has been relentless; and though they’re trying extra hard not to sound condescending towards their readers, it ain’t working.
