“When we keep showing the border, we show that we don’t get it,” the source said. “Stop showing just the border—show churches, show schools, show hospitals.”

Excellent! I'm looking forward to reading more from you! Welcome to The Bulwark!

I live in the county in Nebraska with the highest number of immigrants measured as the percentage of the population. It is home to a very large beef packing plant. The narrative that has grown up in this country about this population is truly appalling. I cannot tell you how excited I am about this newsletter. Off to a great start raising the important issues!

True!! The media constantly amplify the migrants that commit crimes but never the ones that work hard to make our lives easier.

Doesn't that depend a lot on which media you consume? The Bulwark is part of "the media" and so is Fox. Part of the problem is that with newsroom cutbacks, it's easier to get a story at the border than at a church in middle America. Most media these days will go for the quick and easy rather than anything nuanced and complicated. It also depends a lot on what story angle the assignment editor sends the reporter out to get as well as what story the audience wants to see.

How many news stories did we get about the border? or about a migrant committing a crime? But how many news stories did we get about DACA kids working in hospital taking care of sick patients risking their lives? or the immigrants that help with our communities. The news media saw it and ran with it to the bank. So instead of guns and climate being an issue--illegal immigrants and trans people were the scapegoat.
