Thank you for this article. I am an Immigration Attorney so I working tooth and nail trying to send out as many motions as possible in anticipation of Trump 2.0. It is crazy how some ex clients (who were once undocumented via the border entry) supported Trump bc they get fed lies about the new arrivals via their whats app memes and TIKTOK reels. They complain that they didn't get the humane treatment when they came but they are aloof to the fact that they entered without getting caught while the new arrival have been caught and face a deportation. Also i have family members that rant about Immigrants even they are 1st or 2nd generation and forget the fact that the first person in our family who started the chain was a visa overstay and got her papers via amnesty. The right wing talking points have a very strong foundation in spanish speaking media. I hope there will be a spanish version of the bulwark to combat this misinformation. I am also an immigration attorney and hear the same from my clients. They feel the "new arrivals" are being handed the sun, moon and stars while their parents and grandparents got nothing. These USC's are sitting in my office trying to sponsor a family member while bragging they voted for Trump because they want fairness, lower prices and lower interest rates.
Do newer arrivals really get handed "the sun, moon, and stars" over past immigrants, or is that a concoction of lies to divide people? I really don't know....
Its more lies to divide people. One notion that they don't put into context is that the newer arrivals were caught by ICE while the old-school EWIs (entered without inspection) were not caught. When released, there are NGOs that help them get to where they need to go but that has been practice for a long time. Its just that this gets amplified amongst the Spanish-speaking community with embellished lies that they get a free cell phone and a free hotel room to stay in. The Cell phone is a tracking device from ICE and the hotel room is a place to house them until they find housing for themselves. At the end of the day, the OG EWIs didn't get caught and do not have a deportation case hanging over their heads while the newer ones are combatting a deportation case with a more hostile environment. Trust me, the newer arrivals would much rather be in the OG's place anyday
I just read an article in the Washington Post where a woman, who is here illegally, had her two sons, born here, vote for Trump because “ nobody helped me.” She went on to say she stole money from someone after she found a missing wallet. Now, I guess, she fits the profile of someone who should be deported under the Trump plan. Can’t make this stuff up.
