I remember attending an animation festival in Raleigh, NC circa 1994-ish. Pixar presented their short with the lamps and said they were working on the first ever fully computer animated film (Toy Story). They handed out investor packets, but I was on my way to by a twelver of Natural LIght with my friends and that's all the cash I had. Missed opportunity.
Pixar's trick was always sort of keeping the metaphor in the background. Classics like The Incredibles, Wall-E, and Up were metaphors but they weren't too on the nose. There's been a shift now and it feels like they've lost the "thing" they had. W/R/T animated movies and franchises, I think the Marvel Universe films are bad movies with great moments. But people will turn out for one more iteration of "dangerous things are scattered around the universe and our hero has to find them before the bad guy does" ad nauseum.
