A public recantation (just to ease my own conscience): Shortly after the Convicted Felon picked Vance to be his VP, I opined in this comment stream 1) that Vance is smart, way smarter than Trump; and 2) that Trump had better watch his back because Vance is hugely ambitious. I WAS WRONG. JV Dance (is that right? No? Whatever. He's got seven names anyway, I don't care), Dance is a functional cretin and his calculations are craven, not cold.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

I think of the pick like a VC putting one of its own on the board to protect its investment. Trump needs someone active on the trail, needs the tech bro, Catholic/ christofsscist $$ and other support. Vance does well on TV and gets a chance at their role if they win. Christian nationalists are so close to getting more power in USA, , they need to go all in now.

Christian nationalists.. Make America Mediocre

I read an opinion piece where someone posited that the GOP may be looking to Vance to "be presidential" or something of like, since Trump can't be. It might be an interesting messaging strategy to talk about Vance being President. I bet that would sow a lot of discord between Trump and Vance.

I agree. I might sound conspiratorial, but I think that those tech bros and heritage foundation pushed JD Vance for the VP nominee because their plan is to push out the orange musollinii once they get elected and then their guy would be the POTUS to do whatever they want to do. I mean the orange musollinii is almost 80 and is not in good health. The chances are pretty high for him not to finish his term if he gets elected. Somebody needs start talking about voting for the orange musollinii is voting for Vance as the POTUS as Haley did about President Biden and VP Harris.

After listening to audio of last night I admit to thinking of him and Orange Slurpie.

Good idea, That should be good for at least a few NYT top-o-the-page headlines, right? I mean, they didn't shy away from anything anti-Biden. (hope the sarcasm toward the Times is obvious)

IIRC, there was a lot of talk about how Harris would clearly be President at some point in a second Biden term, so it would seem to be very reasonable to talk about the same with Trump and Vance.

Hell, I heard a story that the betting markets had moved Haley from 250:1 to 50:1 to be the next President.

I got the impression from the piece that maybe Vance should be talked up somehow more as the presidential candidate now, rather than Trump.

Well in fairness, all that could be true and he could still be way smarter than Trump ...

Thank you. I feel better now.

I think it is possible that your current evaluation of Vance is correct AND that your previous one is as well. Vance is still way smarter than Trump and Trump had better still watch his back.

Of course, given his history, Trump probably has some experience watching his back.

He pays other people to do that, except that it doesn't always work out. Especially when he refuses to pay those people's legal bills and they face (or serve) prison time.
