When I heard Vance's statement (first and most vociferous) blaming Biden's rhetoric for the attempted assassination, I thought there is Trump's VP. Full stop. Hillbilly Vance will be the bulldog while Trump plays a more milder and gentler version. (at least for a while)

Trump's idea of kinder and gentler is to invite all of us to bow down before him and never say a bad word about him again. If we don't agree, what a rotten bunch we are.

His surviving an assassination attempt does not make him a hero in my eyes. He is still the same obnoxious grifter he always was.

Well at least if we don't bend the knee to Trump he doesn't has dragons to incinerate us like on House of the Dragon. :)

You may wish he did have dragons before long - one quick burn (some screaming) may end up being preferable to watching our country incrementally burn….sorry

Not sure I can agree with your conclusion, Dave, that CFT will play second fiddle to anyone, let alone the guy who is next in line to him, and capable of initiating the 25th Amendment. OK, I doubt that CFT knows about those fine points, but the fear and loathing of competition is baked in to his .... whatever he has that is subect to baking in.

I heard it suggested (in jest) that Trump should pick himself. (not that he cares what the constitution says)

As his own VP? That means the Speaker of the House is POTUS if CFT buys the farm.

To you Joe,Marc and Sam, you have my condolences in having to cover the RNC convention. My guess in all three of you drew the short straw.

I would very much like to believe that we are going to see a kinder, gentler Trump. But there are at least 2 problems with this fantasy. First, trump is by nature not a kind, gentle person. Since coming down the magic escalator, his speeches for the most part have been dismissive of immigrants (his own grandparents?), hostile to the rule of law, filled with (to be generous) misunderstanding of general truths, and supportive of those on his side who espouse violence. Second, his base is about as right wing as can be. If they believe Trump as really become kinder and gentler, they will turn against him.

Expand full comment

You're absolutely right. Trump cannot be kinder and gentler. After he invites us to unite by bowing down before him, he'll be back to petulance in a New York minute when it doesn't happen. Don't worry about Trump—big baby gotta scream his lungs out.

"...this is what happens when you don't put the best players in". Was Burchett looking in the mirror or pointing to specific members of the R Caucus he said that?

Let's not forget about what we need to do with our ticket. As it is now more important than ever. In making this decision there is no need to read polls as the needed margin to win is lost in the rounding. Rather, just apply some basic logic.

The case to replace Biden:

All that matters are swing state 'double haters', or given the tragic events of Saturday, maybe we should call them "double dislikers" . In 2020, a vigorous and coherent Biden faced an unpopular president, and even then only won by a razor thin margin. In 2024 he is the unpopular one (undeservedly so) who is not vigorous nor particularly coherent. It's inconceivable that he can hold that margin. Those who think elsewise remind me of the Paul Simon line in 'The Boxer', "A man sees what he wants and disregards the rest".

How to find the right candidate to replace him:

Any candidate will, at a minimum, hold the voters that Biden currently has. Does anybody really think that swing state double hater is going to say to themselves "I dislike Trump so much that I will vote for a senile old incoherent man that I also dislike. But if the dems give me a young likeable candidate who can speak coherently, then forget, I will vote for Trump". So the question comes down to- can the new candidate capture enough swing state 'double haters' to win.

Who is the potential new candidate:

Who will add the most vote comes down to two factors. Their 'turn off' factor and their 'appeal' factor. Do they have enough 'appeal' to offset their 'turn off'. Again, we are only talking about the perceptions of the swing voters who will decide this election. I think that both Newsom and Harris have a turn off factor with their only appeal to the swing state 'double haters' being that they are not Biden. The popular swing state Governors have a demonstrated a significant appeal to swing voters that more than offsets any potential turn-offs. My preference would be Whitmer over Shapiro. Whitmer has some of that plain spoken 'Scranton Joe' to her. It is probably too soon to say this, but she also has a story of bravely facing down a threat to her life. Mitigating, somewhat, the story that will now surround Trump.

Expand full comment

Biden is often quite coherent. Doesn't really excuse his moments of baffling ineptitude. But swing voters may prefer someone with character to someone without. We'll see.

Expand full comment

we have a number of other candidates with character AND are young and always coherent. Biden had been a very effective president and doesn't deserve his low approval rating, but he has one. It is what it is, we have other candidates who would have a much much higher odds to defeat Trump. There is too much at stake to not put forward our best chance, especially since Biden's odds are well below 50/50.

Things are just breaking Trump’s way. You cannot keep Biden at the top of the ticket and have any prayer in November. Trump’s change to the platform on abortion and somewhat more cautious tone indicates he knows this is now his race to lose. The Dems just have to get Biden to step aside.

Expand full comment

No. What they need to do is stop focusing on Biden's faults and start hammering Trump. That's what needs to be done. It's like everyone wants Biden to fail and elect Trump because of all the infighting.

Understood. The problem is that Joe Biden no longer has a realistic path to victory. Over 70% of the American people believe he does not have the mental capabilities to serve a second term. He is behind in every single swing state. Four years ago at this time, he was up 5 to 10 points nationally. Look where he is now. Watch his interview with Lester Holt from this evening. I’m sorry, but Joe just does not have a prayer. We need a different candidate who will inject some new energy and give people in tough races ballot some chance to win.

Dems need to point out two things. The first is no one is guaranteed a full four years....see asassination attempt on Trump. The second is a direct comparison between the qualifications of the two VPs....Vance has none.

We need to get the experienced Senator Biden with sharp political instincts to have a sit down with President Biden. I think President Biden will listen to him.

When Trump formally and irrevocably denounces his, his party's and the MAGA calls for violence and makes true and irrevocable amends for his comments, like laughing at the attack on Pelosi, AND continues to denounce such comments, I will believe his statement regarding unity. Otherwise, it's just a gambit, and they will all be back to talks of vermin, civil war, infestation, invasion, etc. and the requisite level of violence to stop them.

I posted a link to I think Daily Kos which had a list of all the times Trump has called for violence. Dozens of times, pretty much every speech. I'll have to find it.

"Today is not just some isolated incident.

The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.

That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.” JD Vance

And now he’s second in line to a potential and aging president whose mental state is hardly reason for optimism and whose disdain and disregard for the Constitution is blatant. Great!

A" remarkable shift in character"? Are you soft in the head, Joe? When violent vitriol continues to win the day a "unity" speech is about as saleable as DJT claiming marital fidelity. With DJT's post assassination attempt now confirmed legend comes a martyrdom only Hollywood could have better scripted. Cry havoc! As more information comes out about the shooter it seems a good possibility this is as much a story about a mentally troubled person having access to firearms rather than being explicitly political. You could argue GOP policies helped create this scenario but ironically they are benefiting from their failed policies in this case. Trump really has to be one of the luckiest SOB’s that ever lived.

It appears somewhere along the line, that the US has pissed off destiny. Or, perhaps destiny is trying to make if painfully obvious to the dems that we need to change our ticket. Let's heed the warning before it's too late.

I thought???? “An assassination” attempt only happened to the “sitting” President?…. And tho some commentators are ‘wont’ to Call FORMER President Donald Trump “president’, he IS NOT the president at this time… ? Truly curious….

I think it also can apply to candidates as well, as anyone at some level of power, governmental primarily. Per Merriam-Webster, "assassination" is used generally in the context of political killings.
