Those with the *least* to lose (aka our big private and public institutions who could have united and beat this bastard back) are prematurely caving in to Trump's authoritarian 'project'. This leaves the rest of us exposed. But I fear that the majority will just accept that the new reality is "keep your head down". And a low grade fear of constantly being under attack. For the right, it will still/always be 'the libs' because that's the only motivation Trump/Vance et al provide them. The fear mongering will never cease. For the rest of us, it's the outright hatred and vengeance of the authoritarian government and the authoritarian mob that no longer respects the Founders' definition of freedom. And everybody will start to accept corruption on an increasingly local level. Bribes for everything. And verbal contracts will be worthless since distrust is the coin of the realm.
With this latest memo, Trump's nakedly authoritarian threat to the rule of law could not be plainer. It's also quite clear that the capitulation by Paul Weiss last week signaled to Trump that Big Law would be willing to put money over principles and "go along to get along" with his utterly corrupt administration. The result: even more audacious and widespread threats.
Maybe now what's left of the legal profession will stand together and recognize that unless they steadfastly oppose this administration's assault they will all become victims sooner or later.
I mean CBS settled a frivalous lawsuit over the Kamala Harris 60 minutes interview. Now this. Once you have chilled the press/media and legal representation all you need to do is suppress peaceful assembly and voting and you're at Russia or Turkey. Looks like that will all be well under way by 2026
