I believe that the phrase "leader of the free world" should no longer be used to describe the president of the United States, even to make a contrast, as Politico did here. Let's be accurate about the current world order.

Up here in Canada, I haven’t heard anyone use the phrase “leader of the free world” relating to the U.S. except ironically, along with other claims like “best country in the world” and “freest country in the world”. Lately, that last one rings ominously hollow. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard any American making that claim since the inauguration. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Honestly, America, we mostly have held you in high regard as a neighbour but sometimes the claims you make about yourself sound a little bit pretentious, at least for Canadian sensibilities. But now we’re really worried about you. Are you going to be okay?
