Along those lines I think that being on the outside looking in when it comes to "Americaness" has helped me see much more clearly what America has been truly about and where things have been headed. I've certainly been much more correct in my assumptions than the people who blew off all the Republican BS during Obama's Presidency and Trump's nomination and early Presidency. People can spout BS about all our liberal democratic freedoms, the Constitution, and the plaque on the Statue of Liberty all they want but that is clearly not what most of the people give a damn about and they have proven it over and over again. Consequently it gives the lie to America as this shining city on the hill. It is definitively not special in any way other than geographic security, wealth and the military power projection those things enable for now.
Are there pockets of people who actually believe America embodies that liberal democratic stuff? Yes, but they are clearly not near a majority and don't, as a group, seem to have any real inclination to work towards increasing their odds of retaining power long term. They mostly seem to assume it will all work itself out because they can't bear to think about what it will imply about their beliefs in America if it doesn't. It is unfortunate that the refusal to come to terms with that is making things less likely to turn out well.
