Weren't we told by breathless Bulwark that his beard was a big ass problem?

What exactly was breathless about it? It was an article.

I hate to comment on someone’s appearance, but I have a hard time seeing his eyeballs. I know folks were saying he is wearing eyeliner but I think it’s that camera angle or something. I can’t figure out why his eyes are always just black holes. I don’t think it’s helping him.

Vance better start working on his adoring gaze as in "his master's voice."

With Vance as VP acting crazy and vicious, maybe the fence setters will think; I thought Trump was off the wall, damned If I'm going to chance this guy as back-up!

So it's Vance. Got me thinking...

In 1858, a bright, charismatic Congressman lost a highly publicized Senate election against Stephen Douglas. Two years later, he defeated Douglas for the Presidency.

In unrelated news, what's Tim Ryan doing these days?

Just want to pitch the Hopium Chronicles one more time. Simon Rosenberg runs it, very action oriented and helping keep me (and thousands of others) sane. Also, great comments with resources, commitment, and positivity. Let's ALL be postcarding and phonebanking! We all have to pitch in.

It's official: JD Vance. Had he wanted to keep competition away from a future Don JR run, he would have picked Burgum. The Vance pick means he wants a maximum ideological loyalist, which tells us a lot about how a 2nd Trump term is going to go.

One of the possibilities I'm keeping in mind but rarely if ever see anyone else mention is whether the VP pick stays VP. If he wants to force him to resign, he can do that, then try to replace him with Don Jr or whoever. Trump has always thought in dynastic family terms, so I do wonder if Vance would last or if he would be seen as a threat. Autocrats only trust blood and Vance isn't blood and Trump himself will be getting very old for a third term. He may be useful for an election but after the election....hang JD Vance because he refused to resign?

Or he could be the power behind the facade. Seems like the catbird seat to me. No need to 25th Amendment the former president when the guy will sit in the residence watching tv and flying out to play golf from time to time.

That may well be how Vance sees his future, along with stepping into the presidency when the old man keels over, but whether it's the future he gets is a different question. I could see Trump preferring no vice president and leaving the office vacant after he gets rid of JD, I could see swapping him for Don Jr, or swapping him for a total zero non-entity who is no threat at all.

He just got the nod. JFC.

There are reports in the media here in Ohio that there is an increased security presence around Vance's residence in Cincinnati.

I don't think that Trump has any interest in a "reset". I think that he has just had an unexpected reminder of his own mortality in a way that even he can't ignore, and it's had an effect.

Unfortunately, I don't think that the effect will last. It is undoubtedly already fading, and fast.

It will just confirm Providence has a plan for him just as surviving July 20 persuaded his predecessor of the same thing. It will make him more narcissistic and tyrannical, not less. He's a malignant narcissist, are all these people forgetting that? That's how malignant narcissistic sociopaths respond, they don't stop having the personality disorder.

“He also spoke privately to Trump in a reportedly cordial phone call.”

Classy move reported in what was almost a throwaway line. Capsule of our whole political discourse.

The idea that Trump could be scared straight by an errant bullet is the ultimate comforting lie we tell ourselves.

So Trump says he'll change his speech for unity while Vance Stokes the fire. One thing is certain, those staffers you asked on background about what the strategy is, are completely making crap up. They don't know what they're doing & react to what Trump says like always. There is very little plan as far as a campaign goes. I'm shocked they stayed quiet when Biden was struggling.

J.D. Vance, in his current incarnation, is a depressing example of education and life experience, and their potential for good, being wasted in the pursuit of raw political power. Some would say that his path is that of someone realizing the American Dream, but that interpretation of the Dream is cynical and corrupt. His actions say he has no inclination to help his constituents or Americans in general, he is only interested in petty self-aggrandizement.

If you think that Trump is suddenly going to plead peace and quiet for the remainder of this campaign, I have some land in the swamp to sell you! It was always his violent talk that memorized his followers and that is why they are the way they are today. Have people forgotten is inaugural American carnage address? That was the scariest and most depressing speech I have ever heard from a newly elected president. No, Trump is not going to change and it's someone on his staff who is writing his speech! Never be fooled by this man who has bamboozled, cheated, lied to, and fooled those who have ended up voting for him. He didn't help them one iota, merely worked to improve his own finances and image because that's who he is. He is and probably always was a fascist (remember his grandfather came from Austria), and he has encouraged more people to support his fascism and at the same time denouncing democracy and America's government. No, this guy isn't going to change his stripes and, hopefully, his attempted assassination won't bring such sympathy that he gets re-elected. The Dems have to go all out and keep talking about Project 2025, which he is determiend to have greater power for himself as president and harm the rest of this country. Biden may be older, but he's honest and spent his entire four years doing things for us and this country, not for himself! Terri Quint
