Regarding Trump malarkey and a possible third term run. Somebody start the odds betting on the date of the first Trump poster where his mug shot is viewed through the Cross hairs of a rifle scope. It’ll happen. And will be shocked.
T. Rump promised that we would never have to vote again - promises made, promises about to be kept once DOGE 'fixes' the 'problems' with vote counts. Obviously the focus will be on Wisconsin in coming days.
History shows that dictators never "retire". They stay in power until they die, are jailed, or exiled. Trump has one other option though: he can be pardoned by his successor. Otherwise he'll spend his post-presidency in court (or jail). We can expect him to obsess more with each passing day about how to secure his future, either by staying in power or fixing the election to secure a pardon.
Okay, let’s not focus on the “is Trump gonna go for a third term” stuff, for a moment…..let’s have a moment to totally enjoy a reprieve in the juice girl gossip and Ben Shapiro!!! Loved it, needed it…. We need to remind ourselves of the ridiculousness of the times we are living in!
Whatever he does with respect to the presidency or vice presidency in 2028, Florida law allows him to simultaneously run for Congress. His district is R+7, a fairly easy win. If Republicans also capture the House, they could make him Speaker, putting him in line behind POTUS and VP. If they are sham Republican cutouts, they can resign together, making Trump president in a way that completely avoids the 12th and has less issue with the 22nd.
Wouldn’t that be just waaay too much work for Trump? Being speaker is a tough job, and there’s so much attendance required. It would all cut into the orange turd’s golf game.
My paranoid mind doesn't feel comfortable simply dismissing this as just another thing he says/does to grab the news cycle, maybe to divert attention from his godawful tariffs. The amendments make it look too hard to pull off, but I read something Jonathan Chait had to say in the Atlantic.
"If you hear somebody say Trump is not allowed to do something, the first question to ask is: what's the enforcement mechanism?" His scenario is that he's just been made the nominee at RNC convention. And the SC now must weigh in, after the convention- because of course, he's been running for a third term. And- of course the party's been been just fine with that. Of course they have.
"Will five people on the court have the guts to enforce the 22nd amendment, effectively cancelling the presidential election? Would the states follow such a ruling in a white-hot atmosphere where Republicans would accuse the judicial branch of nullifying democracy? Every apparently solid assumption about the inviolability of the two term limit gets porous upon close inspection."
My personal conclusion: if there is anything we have learned after many years of observation, there is nothing he will not do, or attempt to do. Nothing. No law, norm or tradition poses any meaningful deterrence when there is something he has decided he will have. And I believe that if he and his associates should decide he must be given a third term, it would be dangerously foolish to assume this could not be made to happen. We must accept the extremely disturbing possibility they might make this attempt, perhaps even with success.
Obviously, from now until the rollout of such a plan, legal thinkers and ordinary citizens will argue how this would actually be accomplished in defiance of prohibiting amendments . But as I see it, we certainly have become familiar with the pattern of defying integral components of law and tradition. A pattern of defying and ignoring, almost mockingly, throughout the years of this man's presence in office. But if we choose to use it, we have earned the wisdom of history, for guidance. The wisdom that we are armed with strong choices, if we wish to use them.
#47 will be dead by 2028 election time - if there are elections then. Am more concerned about Vance and Musk attempting an even more vile ticket in 2028. True, Musk is not US born. Who’s gonna stop him?
You don't know how actuarial tables work. If someone is already 79 and in at least mediocre health with no known diseases that have a poor short-term prognosis, they have a pretty good chance of living five more years.
Trump's mental state doesn't seem great, but I'm way too pessimistic to be certain that in three years he'll be SO incoherent that the MAGATS won't still love him. Whether he can trick enough dull normal swing voters to win is the big question, and probably depends more on external contingencies about how people feel they are doing personally than anything he says, if he can still read a prompter 50% of the time.
NBC brought up the "third term" in their questions to him on Sunday -- after that, the media was focused on that silliness. Another distraction. Something that can be talked about in 2+years. Kristen Welker is not good at her job.
OMFG can we please give the, "Is he serious or is he just joking" BS a rest? 1) Yes Trump is serious about wanting a third term regardless of the Constitution, laws, age and senility, etc., BUT, 2) it is approximately #number 387 on the list of bad shit that is going to happen between now and the 2028 election.
It doesn't matter if he is serious or not, what matters is all of the awful things that the media and Very Serious People are NOT paying attention to when they waste time talking about it. Trump and his people know Americans only have so much attentional capacity (Bannon's "Flooding the zone with shit" strategy) so any of it they can get you to waste on his 3rd term musings is attention they don't pay to the destruction of our democratic republic he is doing TODAY. Please, please, please, independent media at outlets such as The Bulwark, ask yourself this question before you spend any time talking about "Shit That Trump Says":
What are the 2-3 most important things I should write about TODAY? All of the other stuff just helps Trump and his flying monkeys avoid scrutiny.
DT will not leave or give up power voluntarily. His plan is for the republicans to never lose power. He will cheat and conspire to win. That has always been his mo.
Everything out of his mouth is a lie except for what he plans to do about denominating the subject of the lie, whether it’s geography, ‘a lot of people have told me’ bs, social security is a handout bs, the EU are freeloaders, and most importantly his love of America. He despises the vision of America, but he loves the curated visual of wrapping himself in the flag. If he loved America so much why didn’t he serve instead concocting a medical deferment? I’ll stop my rant now. Apologies.
"Right, this calls for immediate discussion." That hilarious line from the "Life of Brian" is all I can think of when I read these comments.
This is not complicated when it comes to bullies. Either you fight or they take your milk money. "It's happening right now Reg!" So while the Romans grab your people and crucify them are you people going to fight or waste your time deciding if we're "The People's Front of America or The American People's Front?
"It's happening right now!" We need to prepare for an ugly fight now, not in 2028! I am a peace lover who had to fight when the fight came to me. This is where we are now as a Nation.
I liked the movie Life of Brian but never imagined it would become a classic whose lines would serve as historical reminders. But if these comments put you in a lousy mood and need a break from depressing news then I'd suggest watching the movie because you'll end up whistling "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life".
I love the last paragraph about the Daily Wire. "Too little antisemitism." Meet the real extreme right. Hint: Ben Shapiro, they don't really love you.

He can't own something that's not for sale.
Maybe stop acting like there's a price tag on your ass?
Just a suggestion.

Yawn
Tren de Aragua will stage another "invasion" in 2028 so a state of emergency will be declared and elections suspended.
Trump dangled this out there to distract from whiskeygate and the kidnappings. And it worked. Again. Innocent people have been abducted! Focus!

And what has the government ever done for us?
