Sonny thank you for recommending "Severance". I can't recall enjoying a season of TV this much in a long time - maybe since "The Wire". I would have missed it had you not mentioned it!
Love this show. Gary Oldman is one of the best actors ever. And the rest of the show is filled with quirky characters you just feel something for each of them, as you watch them make bad decisions.
This is the best show! I loved all the books—then hey presto it’s streaming with a fabulous cast. Gary Oldman is one of the all time best actors in my humble opinion. His Smiley, his Dracula, and now the perfect schlep of a dynamite spy. Happy days.
I agree with you that Apple+TV is the best! I have watched so many series including one that you didn't, For All Mankind. It's such a unique premise for a show, blending several episodes of real life NASA happenings with what ifs, and it works! I love it. I can't wait for more. I do agree with you on Severance, with another unusual premise and one that maybe we've all wondered about. The only movie that touches on it is the old Multiplicity with Michael Keaton. If you never saw that, you must! And because of your reviews, I will watch Slow Horses and Bad Monkey.
Bad Monkey is great television. However, in regards to the Alien franchise, everything after "Aliens" has be second rate with hacked out situations. I.E. In Alien 3, we are suppose to believe that the alien queen brought an egg with her (from Aliens) that latter on its own, somewhere on a vast space ship, tracked down Ripley, figured out how to open the cryopod, infested her, left the cryopod AND THEN CLOSED IT BACK UP!
I hesitate to expound too much on the merits of Mick Herron's British intelligence series Slow Horse. But if you enjoy the TV series, please read the complete series. You will find no better example of dry British wit or detailed character development and blots that will astound you. The stories are contemporary, insightful, and some of the best engaging I have ever read. The quality and entertainment value of these books can not be emphasized enough.
I am HUNGRY for season 4 of Slow Horses. Working with this team IRL would be heaven in my opinion.
Also, Aliens! as well as Alien, is one of the all time bests. Both Slow Horses and the Alien franchise have such well drawn, strong women characters. One of my favorite scenes in Aliens! is an exchange between "Vazquez" and the great, late, Bill Paxton.
I wouldn't say I live for Gary Oldman and Slow Horses (because it could be embarrassing) but there will be NO WAY I will miss this. Thanks for the plug.
I wonder how many people are like me that lose interest entirely in a series that waits too long between seasons. Stranger things and Mandalorian were good examples. I started liking them only to have it die on the vine. Between shortening the length of seasons and long interregnums I just migrate to something else and rarely come back. So, I've returned to the past. I discovered Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman this summer and it is a revelation. Sonny, that's my assigned viewing for you.
I gotta watch Slow Horses now. I believe I found out about Mythic Quest from you and I absolutely loved it. I really like some of the offerings on Apple+. I originally signed up for Ted Lasso and stayed for others. The Family Plan was enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised. It's not deep, has some funny parts, and I didn't feel like I wasted my time. I watched it because I was working a mid shift and I was caught up on shows that I watch. Lessons in Chemistry, in my opinion, was outstanding. Bad Sisters is outstanding! I know opinions are subjective and I believe in that certain saying about opinions, but give it a shot. You never know. I enjoyed For All Mankind. Disclaimer, I was born in the very early 60's so I grew up in the days of the Space Race and became a NASA nerd. I really thought the alternate timeline was interesting. Anyway, thanks for your reviews and suggestions!
Slow Horses is great. I went into it expecting something more post-modern and intentionally frustrating, like an espionage version of The Wire. There are definitely elements of that in there, for sure, but it's also very straightforwardly entertaining.
Love love love Slow Horses. The books are also great. Sonny, have you seen “Bad Sisters” on Apple? It’s a wonderful show by the brilliant Irish woman Sharon Horgan. So great and nobody ever mentions it!
Sh!t yeah!!! I LOVED Bad Sisters. I tuned a friend on to it (she has multiple sisters) and she loved it. She said that her and her sisters would do the same for one of them.

I’m out here doing Apple’s work for them!
Fun fact: Slow Horses season 4 airs on Sept. 4th, which would have been handy to mention in the actual post.

For All Mankind is great. At times there’s some odd writing/plot decisions, but overall it’s worth a watch.

OMG I watch Mary Hartman in its first run on TV. My family and I loved it. Will have to give it a go again now. Thank you for mentioning it.
‘The instigators’ on apple surprisingly fun too.

I loved Lessons in Chemistry!

I LOVE Slow Horses. Thanks for promoting it. Gary Oldman is genius and the scripts are tight and well written. The seasons zip by too quickly.
Is there anything Gary Oldman isn't good in? He's one of those actors where the movie may be bad but he is brilliant in it.
